
Assembly Design Engineer
Job Description
Summary
The Assembly Design Engineer will be responsible for creating and maintain a system of standard design elements used in high performance coaxial cable assemblies and group B kits. This position will serve as subject matter expert on materials, components, techniques and methods.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work as primary Assembly Design Engineer to assist in continual improvement of design and "design for manufacturing" DFM features
- Standardize design and manufacturing methods to maximize consistency in a high mix, custom manufacturing environment
- Evaluate, select and specify materials used in the design of high-performance cable assemblies and cable harnesses
- Make mechanical and electrical design calculations for tensile, torque, crush, vapor sealing, loss, phase, VSWR and other critical design attributes using established engineering practices
- Develop and test prototypes and/or perform RF simulations and analysis to optimize designs prior to release
- Research new materials and processes as required to support adverse environments and other exotic applications
- Work with suppliers and internal partners to assure/improve manufacturability of new and existing designs
- Work closely with sales and applications engineering on new products and new markets by assisting with ideas and converting ideas into workable designs
- Provide design solutions while being mindful of form, fit, function, manufacturability, and cost
- Research relevant component and technical resources in support of project objectives
- Constantly seek to improve design capabilities through study, reading, observation, and evaluation
- Assure all design work meets pertinent customer and industry standards, particularly safety and quality
- Reviewing/troubleshooting of documentation related to manufacturing and testing of RF coaxial cable assemblies
- Assist in identifying root cause of mechanical and electrical failures on the production floor
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar field
- Thorough knowledge of MIL-STD-348 and IEEE 287 interfaces • Familiar with MIL-DTL-38999 interconnect systems •
- Detailed understanding of IPC-620 workmanship standards • Detailed understanding of modern machining operations and cutting tool technology
- Proficient with RF and Microwave test equipment
- Experience with CST or similar RF simulation software
- Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail
- Ability to organize design effort, keep orderly documentation and handle multiple tasks, assignments, and projects simultaneously
- Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, provide technical insight into problems and deliver effectiveness in completing job assignments
- Experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCad, Draftsight and SolidWorks
- Experience with mechanical component design
- Familiarity with Military Standards and test requirements preferred
