Job Description
Job Title
Sr. Estimator
Reports To Regional Service Manager
Position Summary
The Estimator is responsible for developing accurate, competitive, and compliant cost estimates for mission-critical communications solutions, including Motorola LMR radio systems, dispatch console systems, public safety in-building coverage systems (BDA/DAS), PLTE, and Security Solutions. This role serves as a technical-commercial bridge between Sales, Engineering, Project Management, and Service, ensuring proposals reflect scope accuracy, regulatory compliance, constructability, and realistic delivery costs while protecting margin and minimizing execution risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed cost estimates and bills of materials (BOMs) for:
- Motorola LMR infrastructure (conventional, DMR, trunked, simulcast, P25 Phase I/II)
- Dispatch console solutions (AVTEC, MCC 7000 series, AXS, VESTA, logging recorders, IP backhaul, and other dispatch solutions)
- In-building public safety coverage systems (BDA/DAS, ERRCS, IFC systems)
- PLTE and Security Solution collaboration with specialized team support
- Perform take-offs from drawings, RF designs, and site surveys for equipment, cabling, antennas, fiber, power, grounding, and labor.
- Collaborate with RF Engineering to ensure designs meet coverage objectives, capacity, redundancy, and survivability requirements.
- Validate scope of work, assumptions, exclusions, and risk factors in all estimates.
- Prepare professional proposal inputs, including technical narratives, pricing breakdowns, alternates, and options.
- Partner with Sales to support solution design and pricing strategy aligned to customer requirements and BearCom margin targets.
- Work closely with Project Managers and Service Managers to ensure estimates reflect realistic labor hours, equipment lead times, staging, commissioning, and acceptance testing requirements.
- Participate in pre-bid reviews and risk assessments
- Support customer-facing technical reviews as needed to clarify scope and cost drivers.
- Ensure estimates and designs align with applicable standards and codes, including:
- Motorola Solutions design guidelines and best practices
- NFPA 1221 / 1225 / 72
- IFC, IBC, and local AHJ requirements for BDA/DAS systems
- FCC Part 90 requirements
- TIA/EIA, BICSI, and NEC standards
- Account for permitting, inspections, testing, and AHJ acceptance requirements in estimates.
- Identify technical, logistical, and commercial risks during the estimating phase and propose mitigation strategies.
- Develop contingency allowances based on project complexity, site conditions, and regulatory uncertainty.
- Track estimate accuracy versus actual project costs and continuously improve estimating models and labor standards.
- Maintain standardized estimating templates, labor units, and cost databases for LMR, consoles, BDA/DAS, PLTE, and Security solutions.
- Capture lessons learned from completed projects to improve future estimates.
- Support continuous improvement of BearCom’s pre-sales and estimating processes.
Required Qualifications
- 6 years’ experience with a bachelor’s degree or 10 equivalent experience in estimating or pre-sales for mission-critical communications, RF systems, or low-voltage infrastructure projects.
- Strong working knowledge of Motorola LMR systems, dispatch console architectures, and BDA/DAS/ERRCS solutions.
- Experience interpreting RF designs, floor plans, riser diagrams, and construction drawings.
- Proficiency with estimating tools, Excel-based cost models, Pivot Tables, and proposal development workflows.
- Strong understanding of labor modeling, installation methodologies, and commissioning processes for RF and DAS systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with Sales, Engineering, Project Management, Service Management and customers.
Preferred Qualifications
- RF engineering background or Motorola formal training (BSEE, BSEET, or equivalent experience).
- Motorola Solutions certifications (System Planner, P25, Dispatch Console, etc.).
- Familiarity with project costing methodologies
