Job Description

States considered: NJ

Role Description:

The Director, Business Development Finance reports to the Head of Business Development Finance and serves as a key finance partner to the broader Business Development organization. This role leads the development of rigorous financial models and investment analyses that support the evaluation, structuring, and execution of external business development opportunities, including acquisitions, in-licensing, joint ventures, commercial distribution arrangements, divestitures, and minority investments. The Director also supports select internal strategic and capital allocation projects (e.g., assessing investment alternatives, new product/species opportunities, and resource planning implications).

The output of this role is clear, decision-ready financial insight for senior leaders—articulating strategic rationale, value creation, key assumptions, diligence findings, sensitivities, and recommended paths forward. Success requires strong financial acumen, sound judgment, and the ability to work globally and cross-functionally while constructively challenging deal terms, assumptions, and recommendations to ensure transactions are strategic and value-accretive.

This role interacts regularly with Business Development Leads, Legal, Technical Accounting, Tax, Treasury, and other finance leaders, and partners as needed with Global Strategy, Commercial leaders, R&D, Manufacturing, and external advisors (e.g., bankers, consultants, auditors).

Responsibilities

  • Lead financial evaluation of BD opportunities across a range of transaction types (M&A, licensing, collaborations, commercial arrangements, divestitures, minority investments).
  • Build, own, and continuously improve complex financial and valuation models, including scenario/sensitivity analyses and clear articulation of key value drivers.
  • Drive financial diligence: coordinate and lead finance workstreams; synthesize findings; identify risks, mitigations, and deal implications; ensure appropriate documentation.
  • Develop investment theses and recommendations that connect strategy to economics (value creation, returns, downside protection, and execution considerations).
  • Prepare executive-ready materials (transaction memos, presentations, and supporting analyses) for senior leadership and governance forums.
  • Partner cross-functionally to shape and challenge deal structures and terms, ensuring alignment with strategy and long-term value.
  • Coordinate transaction-related financial execution with Treasury and other finance functions (e.g., payments, funding considerations), as applicable.
  • Monitor industry and market trends to inform opportunity assessment and emerging business development priorities.
  • Support continuous improvement of BD finance tools, templates, diligence playbooks, and ways of working to improve quality, speed, and consistency.
  • Mentor/coach colleagues on the deal team on financial topics and set a high bar for analytical rigor, integrity, and collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related discipline), or equivalent relevant experience.
  • MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in investment banking, strategic finance, corporate development, or consulting, with meaningful exposure to transaction execution and valuation.
  • Strong working knowledge of financial statements and accounting principles; experience partnering with Technical Accounting/Tax/Legal on deal structures preferred.
  • Healthcare experience preferred; Animal Health experience is a plus but not required.

Skills & Capabilities:

  • Advanced financial modeling, valuation, and analytical capability; able to translate complexity into clear decision points.
  • Strong strategic and critical thinking, with consistently sound judgment and high integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diligence and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
  • Excellent communication skills (PowerPoint, Excel, and verbal), including the ability to communicate a “financial thesis” to senior stakeholders.
  • Highly organized; comfortable managing multiple concurrent, ambiguous, and fast-moving projects.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Comfortable engaging with and challenging senior executives and external counterparties (bankers, consultants, potential partners).
