This is a single contributor role and will have end-to-end responsibility for all legal matters in Malaysia and Singapore. He/she will provide legal strategy to accomplish the objectives of the business units while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The successful candidate will be the legal business partner to the Managing Director of Malaysia & Singapore, and be the representation of legal leadership and capability within the Malaysia & Singapore Leadership Team. This role will also support the APAC Global Business Services team based in Malaysia.
Key Responsibilities
Prepared to travel within Malaysia (including to Kluang where the plant is located), Singapore and regionally / globally as needed.
Legal business partner to the Malaysia and Singapore leadership team. Identify legal risks, propose changes required and where relevant lead the implementation of the changes.
Contracts: Review and participate in the negotiation, review and approval of material contracts.
Marketing and digital / social commerce: Provide guidance, advice on product developments and approval of marketing claims and commercial initiatives (including digital and social commerce initiatives)
Employment: Provide legal advice on employment-related issues, work closely with HR to ensure country practices, polices and work rules comply with relevant labour regulations and to maintain harmonious relationship with Union, advise on employment disputes.
Disputes / Litigation: Lead and manage legal disputes including marketing claim challenges and regulatory inquiries and investigations.
Regulatory: Legal guidance to manufacturing / plant team on dealings with regulatory agencies during inspections, inquiries, or investigations. Advise on legal risks regarding accidents, environmental incidents, or occupational health issues, and where necessary coordinate with outside counsel on enforcement actions or litigation.
Data Privacy and AI: Review initiatives which use personal data and use of generative AI.
Competition law: Advise on pricing related issues, and competition law related issues including interaction with competitors and trade associations.
Intellectual Property: Advise on and lead IP disputes including counterfeiting and infringement.
Processes: Develop / update contract template. Develop / implement internal processes for contract review, marketing claims review and other legal related matters.
Participate in negotiation and advice and be involved in preparation of documentation for mergers, disposals, restructures, strategic alliances and acquisitions of companies.
Elevate legal issues of importance to senior business and legal leaders and actively participate in knowledge sharing
Work in partnership with Compliance & Ethics Leader to drive compliance in geographies covered including driving compliance trainings and initiatives.
Manage external counsel and external counsel spend.

To succeed in this role, you will need the following qualifications:
Required Qualifications
Law degree and qualification to practice law in Malaysia or Singapore (or Commonwealth country e.g. UK), with at least 8 years’ experience.
Mixed of top / mid tier law firm and in-house experience with an MNC. Strong candidates with experience only in a law firm will also be considered.
Fluency in English and Bahasa Melayu (both oral and written)
Prepared to travel within Malaysia (including to Kluang where the plant is located), Singapore and regionally / globally as needed.
