Job Description

This is a key role in the BBC North East & Cumbria digital team. It is an exciting news patch and as a senior journalist and sub editor you will play a vital role in the stories we cover and how we tell them. As well as ensuring our copy is tight, accurate and engaging for our audience, you will play a full role in working with journalists to produce original stories and creative treatments.

On any one day you may be subbing a breaking news story, working with journalists on original stories or ensuring our stories are presented in an engaging way for our audiences. As well as working with journalists on the digital team you will work with colleagues from TV and radio to ensure their stories are told on our digital platforms.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Subbing and publishing news stories and features on the BBC website and app to a potential audience of millions across the world and ensuring the highest standards are met
  • Supporting our journalists to ensure we are getting the most from their stories online with the aim of serving both our local audience as well as potentially a national and international audience
  • Ensuring stories are clear, legally sound and engaging
  • You will have a thorough understanding of journalism law and the importance of adhering to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines
  • You will be brimming with ideas for great content. You’ll understand how to tell a story in a way in which appeals to our current audience and attracts new readers. You will have a good understanding of what people want from digital news

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Substantial experience of subbing and writing news stories and features in a daily news environment
  • A good understanding of media law and the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines
  • A thorough understanding of headline writing, particularly using SEO, and images to ensure our stories are reaching our audiences
  • Being able to provide constructive feedback to journalists
  • A recognition of the importance of diversity in the stories we are telling and how we can achieve that

 

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • An understanding of audience analytics and using them to understand the stories and treatments which appeal to our audiences
  • Experience of supporting journalists to tell their stories including suggesting treatments and ways into a story
  • Being able to adapt to new ways of working and a willingness to experiment with new story treatments
  • Be familiar with social media in a news context and know how to make the most of various platforms to reach a range of audiences
