Job Description

The Utah Department of Corrections Law Enforcement Bureau is looking for an Evidence Technician. Evidence Technicians work with Law Enforcement personnel in the Department of Corrections receiving, collecting, storing, marking, transporting, and maintaining security of evidence for criminal prosecutions. Employees enter evidence into a reporting system, may testify in court, and may be assigned to destroy evidence. Work is performed in an office setting with periods of time working in an evidence/storage room. Employees will also travel to other offices to include the two State prisons to collect evidence. Key responsibilities and day to day responsibilities of this position: Maintains integrity of evidence by following policy and protocol of evidence collection, transportation, storage and required entries into reporting system. Manages evidence to make available to agents and attorneys as required, i.e. court appearances; transfers for forensic examinations, etc. Packages evidence according to best practices for specific types of evidence. i.e. electronics, firearms, narcotics. Utilizes data systems to track case progress, court dispositions, plea agreements that influence the status of evidence. Delivers presentations, stand up training, or instruction to staff regarding best practices of evidence processing and management. Testifies in court when subpoenaed. Arranges to return property to rightful owner when appropriate to do so. Follows proper procedure to document and follow state law pertaining to release of property and evidence. Conducts periodic audits of property inventory. Collects evidence from any and all State AP P Region offices or State Prisons. Handles Weapons, drugs, and hazardous materials in a safe and secure manner. Other tasks as assigned.
