Senior Financial & Economic Analyst
Location: Parramatta - Hybrid
Employment type: Ongoing Full Time
Salary: Clerk Grade 9/10 ($129,464 - $142,665 pa), plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading
Your role
As a Senior Analyst in the Financial and Economic Analysis Unit within Reporting and Analytics in Strategic Finance at DCJ, this role plays a key part in supporting evidence-based decision-making across the justice and social welfare system. The position is responsible for undertaking complex financial and economic analysis, including modelling costs and benefits, identifying cost drivers of activities and delivering in-depth insights. The insights generated are used to inform policy development, support strategic planning and enable decision-makers to manage costs, assess alternative scenarios and optimise resource allocation across the system.
What you’ll do
As part of the Financial Economic Analysis team within Strategic Finance Division, you will lead and undertake detailed financial and economic analysis and modelling to support budget proposals, policy initiatives and service delivery options. Day-to-day work involves sourcing, cleaning and analysing data/information across the justice and social welfare system, working closely with stakeholders and data custodians to build robust datasets, develop and maintain financial and economic models. The role includes identifying key cost drivers, data mining, conducting cost-benefit analysis and translating complex analytical outcomes into clear, actionable insights. The Senior Analyst also contributes to developing analytical frameworks, tools and methodologies and regularly communicates findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior executives, to support informed decision-making.
The team plays a key role in supporting the Department by delivering financial analysis and building costing/economic models that inform critical decision-making across the organisation. We operate in a dynamic environment that balances a mix of annual BAU responsibilities alongside a variety of ad hoc projects that evolve with the Department’s needs. We pride ourselves on being a highly collaborative team where knowledge sharing and working together is central to how we operate — whether tackling day-to-day work or delivering complex work, you will never be working alone.
What we’re looking for
The ideal candidate is a strong analytical thinker with a natural ability to problem-solve and work confidently through complex financial and operational data. You will bring advanced Excel skills and ideally have experience with tools such as Alteryx, SQL and Power Query to support the team’s broader analytical capability. Equally important is your ability to communicate effectively, this role requires meaningful engagement with stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop models, troubleshoot issues and present findings in a clear and compelling way.
Whether you come from a finance, economics or data background, what matters most is your curiosity, attention to detail, willingness to take on new challenges, collaboration and your ability to manage competing priorities and consistently meet deadlines.
