The Medical Officer, NPL Mine Medical Centre (MMC) operates as part of the multidisciplinary OHS medical and health team along with Nursing Officers, a Pharmacist, Radiographer, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Industrial Hygienist, Emergency Response and Safety team members. As a Medical Officer, you work as part of a team to oversee the health and wellbeing of the New Porgera workforce, support health surveillance and health prevention initiatives, whilst providing medical care and or referral for workers presenting with illness or injuries. New Porgera Mine also assists community medical providers and local patients, as time and priorities allow.
In this role, you will:
As part of the site medical and health team, deliver high quality clinical practice, decision-making, professionalism and effective communication and reporting in representing NPL and during your daily medical activities. Supporting the Nursing Officers, other Allied Health professionals and OHS staff.
Maintain operational readiness to conduct medicine, assisting the medical and health team, ensuring the facilities, equipment and consumables, and ambulances are maintained to operational standards, and in a state of ready to respond to medical emergencies in clinic and across the mine site.
As a Medical Officer and senior clinician, provide leadership in clinical practice over medical and health activities and participate as required on the clinic ‘Doctor on call’ and ‘medical retrieval’ roster.
Work closely with the Health Superintendent, other medical, allied health and OHS staff to support delivery of primary care and occupational health, including health surveillance and workforce health management and promote workforce health awareness and injury / illness prevention through participation in developing and presenting health topics to NPL workforce.
Monitor and maintain infection control, and health and hygiene standards in clinic and during patient care in line with current professional standards and report on opportunities for improvement.
Facilitate and participate in the running of scheduled clinical practice meetings with medical and health team to ensure continuous coverage of patient treatment, appropriate referral and rehabilitation of NPL staff.
Assist the Health Superintendent in developing and improving medical systems and operating standards to ensure required and appropriate medical and allied health coverage for the MMC’s operating requirements.
Participate and provide clinical leadership input into incident, case debrief or peer review and feedback meetings with the focus on continuous improvement. Ensuring all incidents and cases are reported and investigated according to Company policy and statutory requirements and all recommended corrective actions are completed.
Ensure maintenance of own clinical practice knowledge, skills and capability across primary and emergency care, and participate in continuing professional development and CME activities across the annual CPD/CME program.
Develop, implement, monitor and maintain safe work practices, procedures, and promote health and safety awareness initiatives. Promote and comply with the NPL Occupational Health & Safety and Site Policy.
Contribute to the NPL occupational health and safety department program and initiatives, including the attendance at meetings or in response to email communication, as required.
About You
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:
Be a qualified and experienced Medical Practitioner with registration in PNG
Hold an interest or qualifications in occupational and or emergency medicine
Have demonstrated clinical experience, including primary care, emergency medicine and surgery
Experience in providing occupational medical assessment and treatment
Experience in tropical medicine, anesthetics and public health would be an advantage
Possess a sound network of Medical Practitioners and Specialists Physicians to contribute to MMC approved referral network
Demonstrated success as an effective clinical leader
Demonstrated ability to lead a multidisciplinary clinical team, improve patient safely, communicate and report effectively to a high standard
High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in PNG
Mobilization Requirement
This is a PNG National position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off. Candidates must successfully pass a clinical interview, pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Candidates must be PNG Nationals and available to start immediately. Females Doctors are encouraged to apply.
