Description

The Valuations team in Japan is seeking an Associate with a specialization in Jewelry Valuations.

Requirements:

-            Hands-on experience in the jewelry industry, in particular in purchase and sale of pre-owned items.

-            Ability to appraise diamonds, colored gemstones, and pearl jewelry and materials.

-            Fluency in Japanese, both written and spoken, at a business level.

Description of Role

The Associate will prepare inventory analyses and inventory appraisals for the jewelry industry, based on requests from financial institutions for their Asset-Based Loans (ABL).

You will first learn how to calculate the value of inventory and other assets through on-the-job training.

Each analyst will work with one merchant and handle 3–4 companies per month, each with annual sales ranging from ¥2 billion to ¥100 billion.

Your Japanese skills will be used to communicate with clients and produce reports.

In addition to preparing inventory appraisals, you will also conduct on-site inspections and provide consultancy on inventory management.

What is ABL?

Asset-Based Lending (ABL) is a form of financing used by financial institutions. ABL is a method of lending funds using a company’s inventory and equipment as collateral. It is gaining attention in Japan as it enables wholesalers and retailers without real estate to raise capital more easily. In the U.S., asset-backed loans account for about 30% of all loans outstanding. Gordon Brothers, as the world’s largest valuations firm in this field, purchases and sells assets worth over ¥1 trillion annually.

Japan’s ABL market is currently estimated at around ¥500 billion, with significant growth potential toward a projected ¥80 trillion.

Career Prospects

Depending on your aptitude and experience, you may later be involved in building and strengthening client relationships and participating in company-wide projects.

Through this role, professionals from retail or wholesale backgrounds can transition into the financial industry through ABL, gaining both responsibility and fulfillment.

Even those new to finance can build a career by leveraging their industry expertise.
