Description of Work
The Asphalt Analysis and Quality Engineer plays a key role in developing and applying advanced performance tests for bituminous materials, such as hot mix asphalt (HMA), performance-graded binders, and asphalt emulsions. This position also includes working alongside senior engineers and technicians to resolve production, placement, storage, and distribution challenges that impact various HMA asphalt and bituminous products.Responsibilities include overseeing the AASHTO re:Source proficiency sampling program for bituminous material laboratories, coordinating on-site inspections for both liquid and hot mix asphalt, and managing QC/QA programs for Performance Graded Asphalt Binder and Asphalt Emulsion.
Technical duties span material characterization, failure analysis, advanced data analysis, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, method development, reporting, and collaboration. The engineer will work closely with research and product evaluation specialists, analytics and accreditation engineers, and report directly to the bituminous materials engineer. Some overnight, in-state and out-of-state travel is required for this role.
This position requires occasional overnight travel.
The selected applicant for this position must have the ability to work with obnoxious odors and chemicals. Must have the ability to climb and walk on high structures; lift samples and equipment weighing up to 60lbs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to wear safety glasses and other personal protective equipment. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC16 / $57.983.00 - $101,470.00
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Knowledge of engineering theories, techniques, practices, and procedures relating to construction materials, sampling and test procedures.
- Experience with applicable software including Microsoft Office and databases.
- Experience coordinating and communicating effectively with other team members to achieve a common goal.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking and completing tasks independently with limited supervision.
Experience operating and calibrating testing equipment.

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
