The rapid development of AI technology will likely usher in significant social changes and introduce complex legal and regulatory questions about how we engage with AI. Having a sense of how technical advances will interact with market dynamics will help researchers understand and prioritize the philosophical and technical analysis needed to better prepare for emerging policy questions.
Rethink Priorities' AI Cognition Initiative is hiring a researcher to help us predict and understand the future influences driving the development and societal usage of AI agents and social entities. Your first project will be to build an outside analysis of the companion AI market: how companion AI technologies might be designed, who the current adopters are and how that will change over time, how large the market will become and what the key uncertainties are, whether it will consolidate around a few global platforms or fragment along cultural lines, the use of proprietary models or open source alternatives, and what all of this will mean for regulators who will eventually need to govern it.
This is foundational work without clear methods or answers. The goal is to give policymakers and researchers a credible foundation for thinking about what's coming before it arrives. These projects will produce substantial public-facing research outputs intended to anchor policy conversations currently happening almost entirely within industry.

Description
Projects you will be working on include:
Your first year will center on several projects exploring the current market:
- Market projections: Developing structured estimates of the incorporation of social engagement aspects into AI interfaces. Drawing on social media data, loneliness trends, cultural attitudes toward AI relationships, and analogous markets like online gaming and parasocial media. The aim is constructing a range of credible scenarios, not a single projection.
- Adoption and market structure: Mapping the economic, cultural, and regulatory factors that will determine how companion AI spreads — how price-sensitive adoption is, whether network effects favor incumbents, and what different market structures imply for the incentives companies face when deciding how human-like to make their products.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise:
Skills and Competencies
- Strong analytical thinking with the ability to produce credible, well-reasoned estimates from incomplete and ambiguous data
- Comfort with speculative but disciplined forward-looking analysis
- Intellectual curiosity and open-mindedness — willingness to bring together very different kinds of information into a bigger picture
- Strong written communication skills and ability to make ideas accessible to different audiences without sacrificing rigor
- Initiative and ownership over long-horizon projects with limited supervision
- Comfort with remote work and asynchronous collaboration using technologies like G Suite (we're a remote-first organization with staff in multiple time zones)
- Resourcefulness and ability to problem-solving
Knowledge and Experience
- Interest or experience in one or more of the following areas: AI technology, economics, tech market research, venture capital, or product strategy
- Quality of thinking and ability to communicate it clearly to non-specialist audiences
- Familiarity with the AI industry — its business models, fundraising constraints, and competitive dynamics — is a plus, but not required

About Rethink Priorities
Founded in 2018, Rethink Priorities (RP) is a think-and-do tank. Through research and action, the organization improves the lives of humans and animals—both now and in the future.
We work to identify solutions, mobilize resources, and empower our team and others to address some of the world’s most pressing problems. Our team conducts rigorous research across animal welfare, climate change, global health, international development, and other important and neglected areas. Our operations experts help high-impact organizations to improve efficiency and achieve meaningful results.
RP works as all of the following:
- A consultancy doing commissioned work in response to demands from organizations doing high-impact work
- A research institute driven by research agendas we set according to our own priorities.
- A think tank aiming to inform public policy to improve the world.
- An accelerator, incubator, and base for priority projects.
Accomplishments include:
- Bringing attention to neglected issues, such as lead exposure, fungal diseases, and shrimp welfare.
- Increasing the collective impact of advocates across each field in which we work through strategic coordination.
- Investigating potential interventions and identifying the most cost-effective options. In 2025, our research influenced tens of millions of dollars in foundation grants.
- Creating practical tools for philanthropists to compare resource allocations across different species and cause areas and to build giving portfolios despite uncertainties.
- Providing organizations with data to inform their decisions. For example, we have conducted surveys on perceptions of existential risks, AI, effective giving, and other topics.
- Providing fiscal sponsorship and operational support to ensure that high-impact initiatives in areas like AI safety and animal welfare can launch and grow effectively.
We welcome you to review our research database and our latest annual report.
