Description of Work

This Shellfish Rehabilitation Science Lead provides biological oversight for shellfish rehabilitation programs under the Habitat and Enhancement Section. Duties include supervisory oversight of cultch planting and oyster sanctuary program staff, as well as all data collection for both of those programs. This position will serve as the section’s primary point of contact and dedicated member on all shellfish fishery committees, work groups, and other management initiatives. This position will fill the role as subject matter expert for DMF on all shellfish rehabilitation assessments and will coordinate data collection across multiple field offices.

Key Responsibilities:
• Oversee all aspects of data collection for two shellfish rehabilitation initiatives
• Supervise two biologists and three field technicians
• Serve as primary point of contact and subject matter expert on shellfish rehabilitation assessments
• Coordinate field data collection across multiple field offices
• Collaborate with internal and external bodies to advance the Division’s shellfish rehabilitation efforts

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state’s marine and estuarine resources. The DMF’s jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Bachelor's degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
