The Data Engineer II independently implements and maintains data systems, working with Product, Business Analysts, and peers to optimize performance and efficiency across operational and analytical workflows. The role manages responsibilities autonomously, making day-to-day technical decisions and completing work with appropriate guidance for more complex situations. The Data Engineer II implements and manages data ingestion, storage, and integration and contributes to highly integrated, complex data solutions through intimate knowledge of core data management solutions and architectures, including warehouse, lake, and medallion patterns, as well as hybrid deployments across on-premises and cloud environments. The Data Engineer II demonstrates a strong understanding of foundational data processes, including governance, master data management, and metadata management.
Essential Job Functions:
- Implements and manages data ingestion, integration, storage, and processing workflows across systems to support operational and analytical use cases, including self-service analytics and reporting
- Implements complex data transformations and develops data models independently, resolving moderate conflicts and ensuring alignment with established standards
- Ensures data quality and reliability by applying validation practices, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining accurate metadata, catalog, classification, and lineage information
- Monitors data pipelines proactively and troubleshoots and resolves operational issues to maintain system performance and continuity
- Applies security and access controls and implements infrastructure and deployment processes to ensure compliant and reliable data solutions
- Collaborates with Product, Business Analysts, IT, and business teams to deliver data solutions, communicating technical concepts clearly, aligning work to business goals, and providing guidance to less experienced team members
- Delivers features end-to-end, following Agile practices, maintaining accurate documentation, and contributing to onboarding and continuous improvement of team processes
- Other job functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related quantitative or technical field preferred.
- 5+ years of relevant hands-on experience in data management or data engineering disciplines required, including areas such as data integration, data modeling, data optimization, data quality, or related responsibilities.
- Experience in a healthcare industry environment preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of modern data platforms and storage solutions, with the ability to design, implement, and optimize data solutions across systems using established patterns.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage data ingestion, integration, and orchestration workflows using standard ETL/ELT frameworks and tooling.
- Advanced working knowledge of SQL for querying, transforming, and optimizing data, with hands-on experience using scripting languages such as Python for data processing and automation.
- Applied understanding of data modeling, transformation, and visualization concepts to support scalable data solutions and downstream analytics and self-service use.
- Independently applies data quality, governance, and security practices in accordance with established standards and policies, including appropriate handling of sensitive data.
- Diagnoses and resolves data and pipeline issues independently, applying critical thinking and sound problem-solving practices.
- Collaborates effectively with Product, IT, and business stakeholders, communicates technical concepts clearly, and aligns data solutions to business needs and outcomes.
- Working knowledge of healthcare data concepts and environments preferred.
Education
Pay Range
$93,600.00-$154,440.00 SalaryAt Lurie Children’s, we are committed to competitive and fair compensation aligned with market rates and internal equity, reflecting individual contributions, experience, and expertise. The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position. Ranges are regularly reviewed to stay aligned with market conditions.
