Job Summary
Schedule Nights, 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Monday through Sunday, on a rotating basis. 14 shifts per month. This is a bonus eligible position.The Surgery APP Nocturnist is a licensed provider that provides overnight clinical coverage for inpatients across multiple surgical services including General Surgery, Surgical Subspecialities, Urology, Orthopedic Surgery, and the Spine Surgery Services. The APP serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing general surgical care, managing acute clinical issues, and performing bedside procedures.
The PA/NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.
Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
-Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
-Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
-Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
-Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
-Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
-Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
Qualifications
Education
Master's Degree Physician Assistant or Master's Degree Nursing required
Licenses and Credentials
Massachusetts Physician Assistant OR
Massachusetts Advanced Practice Registered Nurse [APRN-NP required
Experience
Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.

The Surgery APP Nocturnist works alongside General Surgery on-call resident in-house who is responsible for consults and OR coverage but also serves as backup for acute issues that arise on General Surgery and Surgical Subspecialty patients. A Urology resident/moonlighter will be on-call but off-site for consults and backup for emergent issues that arise on Urology patients. An Orthopedic resident/moonlighter will be on-call but off-site for consults and backup for emergent issues that arise on Orthopedic Surgery and Spine Surgery patients. Overnight coverage typically includes 1–2 APPs. APP Nocturnist reports to BWFH Surgery APP Manager
