Our Team
This role is part of our Airspace Mobility System (AMS) team. The Airspace Mobility Solutions (AMS) business, part of the Global Business Unit Land and Air Systems, is providing leading edge Air Traffic Management (ATM), Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM), Security and Digital Aviation solutions for the Commercial and Defence sectors.
The AMS business manages 11% of the world’s airspace and with revenues of over 500 million Euros worldwide, is the global market leader in airspace management solutions.
Your role
As a Project Safety Engineer (PSE), you are responsible, working collaboratively with a safety engineering team of 2–5 members, to carry out safety engineering activities and deliver required artefacts on schedule, within budget, and to the expected quality standards. Your responsibilities include:
- Identify and mitigate safety hazards by preparing and maintaining safety plans, risk assessments, hazard logs, and safety case reports to ensure policy compliance
- Develop and manage key safety artefacts using domain standards and best practices, including fault tree analysis (FTA) and Goal Structuring Notation (GSN)
- Collaborate with product engineering teams to define and manage safety requirements, develop hazard mitigations, and support verification and validation to make the solution safer
- Provide safety expertise through participation in safety working groups, review boards, and project meetings
- Utilise Model-Based Systems Engineering tools to maintain safety baselines and manage safety data
- Escalate HSE and technical risks timely, offering clear reports and actionable recommendations
- Align with Thales safety processes while contributing to continuous improvement
- Foster a strong safety culture by delivering training and demonstrating proactive safety leadership
Your experience
- Ideally have 5 years’ experience in a related role
- Experience in the Systems Safety Engineering process in a safety critical industry such a Defence, Land, Manufacturing, Vehicles, Railway, Aerospace, Nuclear or Oil & Gas
- Strong team player with skills in delegation, mentoring, feedback, and negotiation
- Familiarity with Eurocontrol Safety Assessment Methodology and its system safety engineering processes including core system safety analysis techniques: FHA, PHA, PSSA, SSA, ETA, FTA, HAZOP, FMECA, RAM, etc.
- Experience and understanding of the V-cycle, AGILE methodology and how/when the safety engineering activities are interfaced with
- Knowledge of international standards of the safety and SW assurance domains: ARP 4761/4754, DO-278A/178C, ED-153…
- Experienced in both top-down and bottom-up engineering approaches, adaptable to diverse perspectives
- Self-motivated and passionate about systems safety engineering and continuous process improvement
- Skilled in design-to-cost principles and quick cost-benefit analysis
A Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain an appropriate clearance.
