Job Description
- Participates in strategic planning for a safe and healthy work environment as a subject matter specialist. Consults, advises, and conducts training on loss control, safety, health, and environmental programs to prevent or minimize losses associated with accidents, injuries, work stoppages, fines, or penalties for noncompliance from State and Federal organizations, and to minimize losses associated with unauthorized access, natural disasters, or other incidents.
- Works with cross-functional teams to assist operating departments in establishing safety rules and regulations and interpreting state law with respect to safety. Recommends loss control activities based upon State and Federal requirements as well as internal loss information.
- Manages safety engagement strategies and promotes safety culture.
- Coordinates industrial hygiene programs for a variety of occupational exposures. Conducts and/or coordinates field sampling and investigation to accurately assess employee exposure. Consults on compliance with recommended exposure levels to both physical and airborne contaminants.
- Identifies workplace health and safety hazards, assesses risk, and develops mitigation plans. Inspects heavy and light machinery and industrial processes and consults on compliance with safety engineering codes and regulations.
- Performs audits, inspections, and ongoing observations of facilities, sites, and activities routinely to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety, health, and welfare regulations. Ensures compliance with City requirements including Risk Management Programs.
- Responds to emergencies and incidents. Provides accident investigation for all workplace near-misses or incidents, including Workers Compensation liability incidents and claims under the City's Self-Insured/Self-Administered programs. Actively participate in Root Cause Analysis investigations and corrective action identification and timing; recommends, coaches, and manages corrective action implementation.
- Assists City departments with inspections from the Department of Labor & Industries and other regulators, and self-insurance audits for the City's program. Assists with administrative appeals of Department of Labor and Industries citations.
- Implements and monitors various assigned health and safety programs, including but not limited to hearing conservation, vision protection, bloodborne pathogens, respiratory protection, fall protection, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, confined space entry, construction safety, commercial driver’s license, and safe driving.
- Creates and maintains safety manuals, reference materials, notices, documentation, and various records including those pertaining to employee safety awareness, training, and testing.
- Manages safety supplies and PPE inventories.
- Conducts new hire orientation and onboarding. Assists in returning employees from leave back to work in a proper and safe manner.
- Performs related duties as required.

Bachelor’s Degree Path
- Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in a field of study related to safety engineering, safety administration, industrial hygiene, or occupational health.
- Experience: Two years of professional experience in workplace safety planning, programming, coordination, or administration.
- Licenses: Valid driver’s license or demonstrated ability to get to and from multiple work locations as required.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with major course work in a field of study related to safety engineering, safety administration, industrial hygiene, or occupational health.
- Experience: Five years of professional experience in workplace safety planning, programming, coordination, or administration.
- Licenses: Valid driver’s license or demonstrated ability to get to and from multiple work locations as required.
- Job offer is contingent on passing a lift test.
- Occasionally lifts and/or moves equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

This is an online examination that will require a computer. If you do not have access to a computer, please notify Civil Service so that one may be provided. Computer reservations can also be made through your local public library.
Training and Experience Examination instructions and links will be emailed to qualified applicants on June 3rd, 2026. The testing window is June 4th – 8th.
