Senior Software Developer
Job Description
Senior Software Developer
NN Planner Team
Enterprise Platforms
Denmark, Ballerup
Are you the engineer who still loves to code? Join us at a defining moment for NN Planner – Novo Nordisk's strategic global workforce planning platform – where your technical decisions will directly shape how thousands of colleagues across manufacturing, laboratories and support functions deliver life-changing medicines to patients around the world. Apply today and help us build software that lasts.
Your new role
This is not a traditional senior developer role. We are looking for someone who enjoys solving difficult technical challenges, defining technical direction, and then rolling up their sleeves to implement it – discussing architecture strategy in the morning and improving a Python service, designing a PostgreSQL migration, or reviewing a complex pull request in the afternoon.
Day-to-day, your tasks will include:
- Designing and implementing production-grade Python services and evolving REST APIs using FastAPI
- Driving complex technical initiatives across backend, platform and architecture domains, including the incremental modernisation of legacy components while maintaining continuous business delivery
- Designing PostgreSQL schemas, optimising performance and defining zero-downtime migration strategies using Alembic and SQLAlchemy 2.0
- Contributing to AWS platform evolution and Infrastructure-as-Code practices using Terraform, Docker and modern CI/CD pipelines
- Applying Domain-Driven Design principles to define bounded contexts and architectural boundaries that improve maintainability and scalability
- Reviewing code, mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards across the team
- Partnering closely with the Tech Lead, Product Owner and architects on the long-term evolution of the platform
Your new department
In Enterprise IT & Quality, you will be part of a business area that drives impact across the full Novo Nordisk value chain. We strive to stay close to our stakeholders in the business to ensure we deliver on their needs, helping reach millions of people living with serious chronic diseases. Our focus is on being at the forefront within our three areas; ensuring the highest quality for patients, being a trusted tech leader and an environmentally responsible business.
You will join the small, highly capable engineering team behind NN Planner – one of Novo Nordisk's strategic digital products. The platform already supports more than 4,000 users across Manufacturing, QA, QC laboratories, warehouses and support functions, optimising workforce utilisation, laboratory planning, training requirements and operational capacity – and it is expected to continue scaling significantly in the coming years. We work in modern cloud technologies on AWS, with containerised Python services, PostgreSQL databases and a React frontend, and we build software that supports critical business processes in a regulated environment.
Your skills & qualifications
We are looking for a hands-on engineer with deep technical expertise, structured thinking and sound engineering judgement – someone passionate about building software that lasts. You will bring with you:
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including extensive work on large-scale, business-critical applications and modernising legacy systems in production
- Deep expertise in Python and FastAPI (or similar modern backend frameworks), combined with strong experience in PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy 2.0 and Alembic
- Hands-on experience with AWS, Terraform and Docker in production environments, plus a strong testing discipline using pytest and BDD methodologies
- Practical experience applying Domain-Driven Design, Repository Pattern and distributed systems thinking, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and solve difficult engineering problems
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the maturity to make technical decisions that are understandable, traceable, documented and maintainable
- Nice to have: React, TypeScript, Redux, TanStack Query, Storybook, Vitest, Zod and OpenAPI; Operational Research; or experience from regulated industries, workforce planning, optimisation, scheduling, or manufacturing/laboratory systems
