General Statement of Job:

Performs intermediate-skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and care of irrigation systems and pumps; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.   Limited supervision is exercised over subordinate workers.

  • Operate wire-tracking device to locate irrigation wires, and restore 24VAC and 12VDC operations 
  • Operate trencher and have knowledge of operating procedures
  • Repairs and maintains irrigation systems and operates pumps.
  • Use various shovels to dig ditches for irrigation lines, mains, and laterals 
  • Helps disassemble pumps, replace defective parts, and reassemble the pump.
  • Check all pump stations for proper operation, no leaks, and troubleshooting.
  • Checks clocks, timers, valves, and heads.
  • Replaces missing/broken heads and nozzles, and repairs broken irrigation lines.
  • Install electric valves and mainlines for new and existing areas 
  • Operate and troubleshoot Motorola Computerized Controllers 
  • Monitors ICC Systems Central Computer for operation of the field unit Valve addressing Alarms
  • Wet Checks according to the weekly schedule, using ICC Systems Central Computer.
  • Operates and troubleshoots field Radios

 Related tasks:

  • Make Daily inspection of areas using reclaim / potable water City of Boca Raton's Irrigation Standards
  • Responds to emergency calls for leaks running water or valve issues 
  • Makes list of used supplies, parts, equipment, and tools to update inventory system Daily
  • Performs Additional related tasks as required.

Knowledge of:

  • The tools, materials, and equipment used in irrigation system maintenance and repair work.
  • The materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of irrigation system repair and maintenance.
  • Safety precautions applicable to the duties of the job
  • Basic computer operation knowledge.

Skilled in:

  • The operation, maintenance, and repair of electric irrigation Valves and Solar Equipment.

Ability to:

  • Obtain satisfactory completion of Motorola Irrigation System Training
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Use necessary irrigation hand tools and voltmeter to evaluate and repair issue.
  • Operate required machinery and equipment.
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 
  • One (1) year of experience in pump maintenance or irrigation system work. 
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic Irrigation Design Certificate 
  • Basic computer experience preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Constantly operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Constantly assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Constantly observing details accurately and identifying variances.
  • Constantly lifting/carrying objects 50 pounds or less.
  • Constantly pushing/pulling objects 50 pounds or less.
  • Constantly working in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation, or the like.
  • Constantly working in an outdoor area where exposure to animals, reptiles, and/or insects may occur.
  • Constantly working with equipment or performing procedures where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle pulls.
  • Occasionally working in an area that is very uncomfortable due to extreme temperature, noise levels, or other environmental conditions.
  • Occasionally required to demonstrate regular in-office and/or onsite attendance.
Essential Employee Designation

When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration that a state of emergency exists, any employee may be deemed essential by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work.
