Job Description
Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities): Assign a percentage to each essential function (equal to 100%):
- Serve as a clinical and didactic faculty member in the Department of Periodontics for both predoctoral and postdoctoral dental programs.
- Supervise and instruct dental students and residents in periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning, and both non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy.
- Provide instruction in surgical periodontal therapies, dental implantology, laser dentistry, and dental sedation.
- Participate in curriculum development, course management, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Prepare and deliver lectures, laboratory exercises, and clinical demonstrations.
- Mentor students and residents in clinical skills, professional development, and scholarly activity.
- Engage in scholarly and research activities aligned with the mission of Meharry Medical College
- Participate in departmental and institutional committees as assigned.
- Support outcomes assessment and continuous quality improvement efforts
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Demonstrated proficiency in clinical periodontics, including advanced surgical techniques and implant placement.
- Strong instructional and communication skills with experience in academic settings.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse students, faculty, and patient populations.
- Familiarity with current technologies and evidence-based practices in periodontology.
- Capacity to contribute to a mission-driven institution committed to health equity.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred:
- Experience with educational technology and electronic health records.
- Documentation of research and scholarly contributions.
- Experience in curriculum design and academic program assessment.
- Commitment to interprofessional education and collaboration.
Education and Experience Required:
- DDS or DMD from a U.S. or Canadian accredited dental school.
- Completion of a CODA-accredited postgraduate program in Periodontology.
- Clinical teaching experience at the predoctoral or postdoctoral level.
Education and Experience Preferred:
- Master’s degree or equivalent advanced academic credentials in a relevant field.
- Board Certification or Board Eligibility by the American Board of Periodontology.
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching and/or clinical experience.
Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:
- Must be licensed to practice dentistry in the state of Tennessee or be eligible for licensure.
- Board Certification for the Advanced Education program in Peridontics
Licensure, Certification or Registration Preferred:
- Board Certification by the American Board of Periodontology.
- Current sedation certification and laser certification.
