Job Description
What You’ll Do:
- Design AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, control house layouts, and relay panel arrangements
- Model DC systems and specify components, including fuses, chargers, and batteries
- Generate cable schedules, terminal plans, and I/O lists for substation integration
- Perform relay coordination studies and develop settings using SEL AcSELerator, ASPEN, CAPE, or ETAP
- Ensure alignment with utility standards, IEEE, NEC, NESC, and customer requirements
- Participate in cross-disciplinary meetings with civil, SCADA, physical, and telecom engineers
- Support construction by responding to RFIs and providing design clarifications
- Conduct FATs and confirm that panel wiring, labeling, and functionality match the design
- Mentor junior engineers and designers, and contribute to QA/QC reviews
- Support proposal scoping and estimating for labor, deliverables, and milestones
- Document design decisions, maintain drawing packages, and review vendor submittals
- Promote safety and reliability in all technical activities and engineering practices
- Engineer III: 5–8 years of experience in substation protection and control design
- Proficient with SEL AcSELerator, ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, or similar relay software
- Strong understanding of protection schemes and relay philosophies
- Familiarity with NERC PRC standards, SCADA systems, DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850
- Hands-on experience creating schematics, panel layouts, and signal routing diagrams
- Ability to coordinate across departments, resolve layout conflicts, and drive technical quality
- A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required
- PE license required
- Willingness to travel up to 25% across the continental U.S. as needed
- Valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
- Requires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments
- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
- Experience with renewables, battery storage, and DER integration
- Knowledge of utility-specific relay philosophies and design review procedures
- Hands-on involvement in FAT, commissioning, or relay testing
