Role Description:

Arcadis is seeking an entry-level Biologist/Ecologist to join our Enviro Socio Permitting team in New York City. This role will work closely with a team of scientists, engineers, and planners, supporting a wide range of clients throughout the region. The candidate must be a team-oriented individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and capable of managing multiple activities related to environmental compliance and natural resources.

The projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse. The position will require a candidate to work both collaboratively with a team of resource specialists and have the capacity to balance varying priorities and tasks to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines. Arcadis offers a flexible working environment and follows a hybrid work structure. Field work and travel will be required for this position.

Role Accountabilities:

As an entry-level Biologist/Ecologist, you will apply your technical knowledge to work with client teams to provide high quality deliverables to support planning and permitting for a diversity of clients. You will be an important member of the east coast biological team interacting with other junior level biologists/ecologists, senior technical experts and project managers as part of an interdisciplinary environmental and engineering team.

You will be responsible for conducting desktop assessments and field surveys (e.g., habitat evaluations and presence/absence surveys) to evaluate potential project impacts to sensitive habitats or special-status species, and supporting wetland delineations. You will assist in the preparation of technical reports such as species survey reports, wetland delineation reports, mitigation and monitoring plans, biological assessments, and permit applications to support activities in regulated habitats (i.e., waters, wetlands, critical habitats). You will also conduct on-site construction compliance monitoring to ensure special-status species and habitat impact avoidance, and compliance monitoring for mitigation projects to ensure consistency with articulated performance criteria. In this role you will support regulatory reviews to minimize impacts to regulated habitats, develop alternative analyses, and complete impact assessments. This role will require the ability to travel up to 25%, including overnight travel.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science (e.g. ecology, wetlands, soil science, water management). Preference for those with soil science course work.
  • One year of experience in the environmental field or advanced degree in environmental science or similar
  • Knowledge of east coast ecology, wetlands, and habitats, special-status plants and/or wildlife and/or botanical knowledge
  • Comfortable working in remote field locations
  • Proficient using hand-held Trimble GPS
