Working closely with Product, Engineering, Data, QA, Security, and Operations teams, the Principal AI Engineer Lead establishes engineering standards, mentors developers, and promotes best practices across software engineering, DevOps, and MLOps disciplines. Additionally, this role evaluates emerging AI technologies, guides architectural decisions, and ensures AI solutions align with business objectives, responsible AI principles, and regulatory requirements.
What you'll do
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as the technical lead and architect for AI-enabled cloud applications and services.
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable software solutions utilizing .NET, Azure, modern web technologies, and AI platforms.
- Lead the technical architecture and design of AI-powered systems, ensuring solutions meet requirements for scalability, security, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Evaluate, select, integrate, and operationalize AI technologies, including foundation models, Azure AI services, and AI application frameworks.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to developers across engineering teams, promoting best practices in software design, coding standards, testing, and architecture.
- Establish and promote DevOps and MLOps best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, model and prompt versioning, evaluation frameworks, observability, monitoring, and operational readiness.
- Define and maintain standards for AI system evaluation, quality assurance, governance, and production monitoring.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Support, Security, Operations, Legal, Privacy, and customer-facing teams to ensure technical solutions align with business objectives and customer needs.
- Ensure AI solutions comply with organizational standards for responsible AI, data privacy, security, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate AI engineering initiatives across multiple product teams to drive consistency, reuse of platform components, and alignment on architectural patterns.
- Partner with architects, technical leads, and data/ML engineers to establish shared frameworks, models, prompts, evaluation datasets, and reusable AI capabilities.
- Contribute to architectural governance, engineering standards, and organization-wide technology strategies.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, tooling, workflows, and long-term technical direction.
- Provide technical input into product roadmaps and strategic planning activities.
- Research and evaluate emerging AI technologies, frameworks, and architectural patterns, conducting proof-of-concept initiatives and experiments to support technology adoption decisions.
- Promote knowledge sharing and technical excellence throughout the engineering organization.
Who you are
- Minimum 10 years of experience with web‑based software development and system architecture.
- Strong understanding of cloud‑native development, preferably within the Microsoft ecosystem and Azure.
- Demonstrated experience designing, building, and operating AI/ML-powered features in production — including work with large language models, Azure OpenAI or comparable services, and AI application frameworks (e.g., Semantic Kernel, LangChain).
- Current, hands-on technical background in AI — actively working with present-day frontier and open-weight models, modern AI tooling and SDKs, and recent developments in the field; able to read and apply current research and reference implementations rather than relying on dated experience.
- Demonstrated experience with large-scale technical initiatives from ideation to deployment and operations.
- Working knowledge of modern AI architecture patterns — RAG, vector search and embeddings, prompt engineering, agentic workflows, and tool/function calling — and the ability to choose between them based on use case.
- Leverage contemporary tools and current Software Development Lifecycle paradigms to design, deliver, and operate reliable, scalable solutions.
- High focus on quality and familiarity with test‑driven development and automation practices.
- Experience establishing evaluation and quality processes for AI systems — offline evals, golden datasets, regression testing, human-in-the-loop review, and online quality and safety monitoring.
- Strong collaboration skills and experience working in multicultural, distributed teams where English is a primary communication language.
- Ability to balance technical tradeoffs, assess risks, and make informed decisions that align with strategic goals.
- Strong grounding in responsible AI practice — data privacy, PII handling, content safety, bias and hallucination mitigation, model and vendor risk — and familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, EU AI Act).
