Perfect! Magna Steyr Aerospace is currently seeking a master’s student to join us in the area of Welding Technology and Numerical Simulation.
The aim of this master’s thesis is to investigate and develop robust clamping concepts for welding ultra‑thin metallic sheets (nickel-base alloy), with a specific focus on minimizing welding‑induced distortion. Ultra‑thin sheets (< 0.15 mm) are highly sensitive to heat input, clamping concept and cutting‑edge quality, making distortion control a key challenge in laser and micro‑plasma welding processes.
The thesis combines literature research, numerical simulation and experimental welding trials to derive practical design guidelines for production‑ready welding fixtures.
The following scopes should therefore be included in your master's thesis:
Literature review on ultra‑thin nickel-base alloy sheet welding
Development of a thermo‑mechanical simulation model to predict welding‑induced distortion considering heat input and clamping boundary conditions
Analysis of key influencing factors (clamping layout, sheet cutting‑edge preparation, welding parameters, etc.)
Design and development of an optimized clamping concept (prototype)
Experimental welding trials and validation of numerical results
Elaborate of design guidelines for clamping concepts, welding parameters as well as sheet cutting-edge preparation
Who we are looking for
Ongoing technical study at the university / university of applied sciences (e.g. mechanical engineering, production engineering, materials science or similar)
Interest in welding technology and simulation
Knowledge of numerical simulation (e.g. FEM)
Structured working style and strong analytical skills
Your preferred qualifications
Strong interest in Aerospace technologies
High level of motivation, independence and technical curiosity
Good communication skills and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team

Your profile matters!
You will receive a monthly gross compensation of €700 for writing your master’s thesis. Depending on your education and specific professional experience, there is a corresponding willingness to overpay.
