Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Shipping Lead oversees daily shipping operations to ensure orders are accurately picked, packed, documented, and shipped on time. This role provides hands-on leadership to shipping associates, coordinates workflow, maintains accuracy of shipping records, and ensures compliance with company policies and carrier requirements. The Shipping Lead plays a key role in maintaining high service levels and supporting smooth warehouse operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties (Most Important to Least Important)
Daily Shipping Operations
Coordinate and oversee daily shipping activities, including order picking, packing, staging, and loading.
Ensure customer orders are shipped accurately, on time, and according to specifications.
Prepare shipping documents such as bills of lading, packing lists, labels, and carrier forms.
Verify accuracy of orders, quantities, product codes, and shipping addresses.
Team Leadership
Train, guide, and support shipping team members on procedures and best practices.
Assign tasks, monitor productivity, and ensure proper workflow throughout the shift.
Provide coaching, feedback, and support to help employees meet performance expectations.
Assist with onboarding of new shipping staff.
Carrier Coordination & Communication
Coordinate pickups with carriers, freight companies, and small-package shipping partners (UPS, FedEx, etc.).
Ensure all shipments meet carrier requirements and shipping deadlines.
Resolve shipping issues, delays, or discrepancies in a timely manner.
Documentation & Systems
Maintain accurate records in ERP or warehouse management systems.
Confirm shipment details, scan inventory, and ensure all documentation is complete and correct.
Assist in maintaining shipping logs, manifests, and compliance paperwork.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Ensure all shipments are properly packaged, labeled, and meet quality standards.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shipping area.
Enforce OSHA, company safety rules, and proper use of PPE.
Ensure compliance with regulations for hazardous materials, international shipments, or special handling requirements (if applicable).
Inventory & Warehouse Support
Assist with cycle counts, inventory audits, and restocking.
Communicate shortages, damaged goods, or discrepancies to Inventory Control or Management.
Support warehouse operations and cross-train with other departments as needed.
SKILLS
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to lead, motivate, and support a team.
Good communication skills (written and verbal).
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet shipping deadlines.
Proficient in basic computer applications and shipping platforms.
Knowledge of freight, parcel carriers, and shipping regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENT
High school diploma or GED required.
2–4 years of shipping or warehouse experience required; leadership experience preferred.
Experience using ERP or WMS systems is a plus.
Forklift certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
