Job Vacancy: Plant Operator

Department: Water Pollution Control Plant

Requisition Number: 2025161

Hours: Four days on / four days off – 12-hour shifts, 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.

Rate of Pay: $26.61–$31.00 per hour  

SUMMARY Join the City of Fort Wayne Utilities team as a Plant Operator ensuring clean water and environmental safety for our community. This position operates and maintains water and wastewater treatment systems, ensuring compliance with IDEM and EPA standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor and regulate treatment processes, pumps, and equipment
  • Collect samples and perform laboratory tests for quality control
  • Adjust chemical feeds and treatment rates as needed
  • Maintain security and safety procedures at facilities
  • Record data, complete logs, and report operational issues
  • Assist with preventive maintenance, inspections, and chemical deliveries

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED and two years related experience
  • Science-related degree preferred
  • Must obtain required certifications (Wastewater Class II within 3 years, WT-5 within 4 years)
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License and CPR/First Aid certification
  • Ability to read technical documents, perform mathematical calculations, and follow safety procedures

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Exposure to mechanical equipment, chemicals, and outdoor weather
  • Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs, loud noise levels, and wastewater environments
