Business Overview

The Technology Management Division (TMD) provides Corporate IT, and Cyber Security & Privacy Governance to Rakuten Group companies and essential business management for technology organizations, thereby enabling innovation and strengthening the technology foundation. Within TMD, the Corporate IT Supervisory Department (CITD) drives Rakuten’s global corporate IT services and infrastructure.
Our mission is to empower Rakuten through innovative and secure IT solutions that enhance efficiency and foster productivity.

Department Overview

The Global IT Strategy Office (GITSO) empowers Rakuten through innovative and secure IT solutions that drive efficiency and enhance productivity. As a global organization, we standardize processes to provide comprehensive IT support across several core functions: global project management (PMO), solution and enterprise architecture, global business application strategies, and technology services. With a focus on global alignment and strategic IT direction, we play a pivotal role in Rakuten’s digital transformation and operational excellence initiatives.

Our team currently consists of 6 full time members located in Japan, North America and Europe. We are looking to expand our team’s presence in Japan to cover increasing workload.

Position Details

- Solution Design: Design scalable, efficient, practical and business-driven IT solutions that align with business directions, strategies and business requirements

- Design Documents: Deliver design documents, diagrams and implementation recommendations while participating in requirements gathering, design and test phases of IT projects

- Proof of Concepts (PoCs) & Prototyping: Research, identify, shortlist and test through hands-on setup of proof-of-concepts and test environments to design the best IT architecture within constraints set forth by the business

- Solution Evaluation: Determine evaluation criteria of new technology that will support long-term roadmap and ensure compatibility and integration with existing applications, systems or platforms

- Troubleshooting and Problem Discovery: Lead troubleshooting, leverage objective evidence and problem analytic skill to identify core problems to the current technical issue and propose improvements

- Collaboration and Mentorship: Collaborate with management and relevant business stakeholders to deliver solution recommendations; with engineering and operations to ensure solutions are scalable, stable, secure and operationally sustainable

Work Environment

Our team members are all experienced engineers coming from different fields of IT.

Mandatory Qualifications:

- Good understanding on security, monitoring, high availability and disaster recovery principles to apply consistently on system design activity

- Ability to independently add components to lab or other non-production toolsets to test drive a product or execute PoC

- Ability to lead troubleshooting, leverage objective evidence, possess analytics and problem-solving skills to assess situation and identify problems

- Possess scripting skills using Python, Powershell or other interpreter languages

- Understanding of computer networking and how one’s specialization interacts with the network

- Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills and be able to communicate effectively with other team members, other departments/teams or management in a technical and non-technical manner

- Adaptive to new challenges and shows strong desire to learn and explore new and cutting-edge technologies

- Ability to work as a team player for larger projects and individually with minimal supervision while under pressure to meet tight deadlines

- Demonstrated track record working in an international setting, being a team member within a team from various cultural background, working in different geographic locations and time zones

- At least 10 years of relevant IT experience with at least 5 years of solid demonstrated experience as senior/lead engineer-level building and implementation of one of the following fields in a large enterprise setting

- Identity and Access Management (Active Directory, LDAP and Kerberos, Okta, Entra ID, ADFS, PKI and Smart Card, DNS, etc.)

- Cloud IaaS, PaaS (Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, etc.)

- Core Enterprise Infrastructure (Hypervisors [VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, Nutanix], Server Operating Systems [Windows/Linux], Database [Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL], Backup [Veeam, Backup Exec, Cohesity], Logging [Logstash, Azure, Exabeam], etc.)

- Endpoint Technology (Client Operating Systems [Windows, Mac, Linux], Mobile Devices [Android, iOS], Mobile Device Management [MECM, Intune, Jamf], Endpoint Deployment Technology [Windows Autopilot, DEP, MECM, Jamf], VDI [VMware Horizon], Crowdstrike, etc.)

- Enterprise Networking (Enterprise Core Networking [LAN, WAN, Routing and Switching, MPLS, DHCP], WiFi, VPN, ZTNA Solutions [Zscaler, Netskope], etc.)

- Communications and Collaborations Technology (Office 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, Slack, etc.)

- Corporate Office Business Environment for Financial Institutions

Desired Qualifications:

- At least 2-years of architect-level in design solutions of one of the fields above in a large enterprise setting

- Experience and expertise at engineer-level or above in more than one of the fields above

- Ability to independently build a full stack corporate environment to test drive a product or execute PoC

- Current CISSP, Security+ or equivalent security certifications

- Relevant enterprise architecture framework certification (e.g. TOGAF, OpenCA, CEA Black Belt, ITIL, etc.)

- Relevant architect-level or senior engineering level technical IT certifications (e.g. Microsoft, VMware, Cisco, AWS, Okta, etc.)
- Relevant work experience in financial institutions

- Business Level Japanese (JLPT N3 level or higher, and can communicate in a business setting)

This role will be based our Tokyo Headquarters and requires to be on-site at least 4 days a week (subject to change any time).
