Whats the role?
The telecommunications security specialist is responsible for safeguarding the organization’s fixed voice and mobile communications infrastructure. This role focuses on identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities across telecommunications platforms, implementing advanced control measures, and ensuring robust protection of telco protocols, signaling, and network services.
The specialist will play a central role in developing voice fraud prevention strategies, enhancing mobile network security, and working closely with internal teams and external vendors to maintain a secure and resilient telecommunications environment.
What Youll Do
Security Governance & Risk Management
- Assess and manage security risks across fixed voice, VoIP, SIP, SS7, Diameter, 5G, LTE, and mobile carrier integrations.
- Conduct security assessments, vulnerability analyses, and penetration tests specific to telco infrastructure and signaling protocols.
- Develop and maintain telecommunications security standards, policies, and procedures.
Voice & Fraud Prevention/Analysis
- Design and evaluate the implementation of voice fraud prevention strategies, including call authentication frameworks, anomaly detection systems, and fraud response processes.
- Work with fraud management and SOC teams to investigate incidents, contain threats, and establish preventive controls, which may include analyzing the voice traffic patterns to detect toll fraud, PBX misuse, robocalls, spoofing, and suspicious call-routing behaviors.
Mobile Network Security
- Evaluate mobile network security controls across LTE/5G, eSIM, SIM provisioning, APN configurations, and mobile device connectivity.
- Evaluate mobile carrier configurations and ensure adherence to industry best practices (e.g., GSMA, 3GPP, NIST).
- Support secure integration and deployment of mobile services across corporate networks.
Technical Engineering & Infrastructure Security
- Set the standards for securing PBX systems, SIP trunks, SBCs, VoIP gateways, conferencing platforms, and UC solutions, and lead the periodic evaluations of the compliance to these standards.
- Collaborate with network, infrastructure, and security engineering teams to enhance overall telco security posture.
- Evaluate telecommunications security logs, signaling events, and network telemetry as needed, for example, in investigations.
Vendor & Partner Coordination
- Serve as the primary security liaison with telecommunications carriers, equipment vendors, and managed service providers.
- Review vendor security practices, SLAs, and compliance requirements.
- Coordinate security updates, vulnerability patching, and incident responses with external partners.
Incident Response & Operations
- Respond to telco-related security incidents, including voice fraud, signaling attacks, SIM swap attempts, and mobile network anomalies.
- Provide expert input during investigations and ensure timely remediation.
- Collaborate with SOC in the production of (detailed) incident reports and support continuous improvement activities.
Knowledge & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in information security, telecommunications engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- 2-5 years of experience in telecommunications security, mobile network security, or telco infrastructure engineering.
Skills & Abilities
- Deep understanding of telecommunications protocols:
- Fixed voice: SIP, RTP, SRTP, VoIP, ISDN, PRI
- Mobile: SS7, Diameter, GTP, MAP, LTE, 5G NR, VoLTE
