Pay Range: $111,000 - $145,000 per year

UNCOMN is seeking an Application Modernization Architect (Software Developer 5) to:
- Lead application modernization planning for legacy Java or COTS-based systems moving toward cloud-native patterns.
- Assess current-state architecture and define practical decomposition, refactoring, and interface modernization approaches.
- Design service boundaries, API patterns, application workflows, and modernization sequencing that reduce delivery risk.
- Partner with cloud, data, and security teams to align application design with platform, compliance, and operational needs.
- Support technical decision-making around migration pathways, integration dependencies, and long-term maintainability.
- Provide architectural guidance during implementation and help resolve design issues as the solution evolves.
This position description outlines the core duties for this role, but it is not all-inclusive. Responsibilities may shift based on contract requirements, mission needs, or organizational objectives.
Requirements
- 15+ years of related experience.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, CMIS, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or 4 additional years of related experience.
- Experience modernizing business applications that include legacy frameworks, custom integrations, or COTS constraints.
- Strong application architecture skills across service design, APIs, application patterns, and modernization planning.
- Ability to translate business and technical constraints into practical modernization recommendations.
- Experience supporting engineering teams through refactoring, implementation, and transition planning.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills across architecture, engineering, and client stakeholders.
- Must be eligible to obtain a Secret clearance or similar, granted by the U.S. Government, which requires U.S. citizenship. The government also uses 13 adjudicative guidelines to determine an individual's eligibility.
- Must be willing to obtain relevant certifications as required by future client or contract needs.
Preferred
- Experience with Java/Spring-based application modernization.
- Experience supporting Oracle modernization, database transition planning, or container readiness analysis.
- Experience in financial, federal, or other highly regulated environments.
- Candidates local to the St. Louis Metro East market/within commuting distance preferred, although not required.
