Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving skilled electronics installation, repair and maintenance of emergency/response vehicle equipment. Assigned tasks are generally defined and incumbents are responsible for determining the best method for completing repairs or other work.
Typical Functions
The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:
Maintains, repairs and services electronic vehicle equipment, such as emergency equipment, vehicle/body cameras, radios (both portable and in-car type), computers, battery chargers, electronic item-response testing equipment, such as radars, and related items.
Installs radios, radars, camera systems, accessories, emergency equipment and other electronic equipment in agency vehicles.
Maintains an adequate stock of spare parts, tools, supplies and manuals; keeps records and inventory of supplies, equipment and tools. Make periodic reports to the appropriate supervisor.
Installs operational required vehicle equipment, such as tool boxes, bumpers, scene lighting, generators and other related response type equipment.
Performs trouble-shooting work on equipment using meters and or required service repair type monitors. Returns inventory to the appropriate service centers that cannot be repaired at the agency; preforms appropriate repairs and/or adjustments to mobile equipment.
Level Descriptor
Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.
This is the journey level where incumbents perform a basic range of vehicle electronics technician duties.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years of skilled-level experience in electronics repair work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of education/training in the electronics field for each year of the required experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the maintenance and repair of various types of vehicle electronic equipment; of the tools and test equipment used in electrical/electronic installation and repairs of equipment; and of electrical applications for equipment, tools and vehicles.
Ability is required to maintain, install, adjust, operate and repair electronic vehicle equipment; and to create and maintain records of work performed.
Special Requirements
Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
