Title: School Nutrition Services (SNS) Transport & Maintenance Technician

Reports To: SNS Utility Supervisor

Takes Direction From: SNS Coordinator

Schedule/Calendar: 8 hrs./day   40 hrs./week   261 days/year  

Starting rate: $25.61/hr.

 

Summary: The School Nutrition Transport and Maintenance Technician supports the daily operations of the School Nutrition Services Department by transporting food, supplies, and materials between district facilities and performing basic maintenance and custodial tasks. This position plays a critical role in maintaining inventory systems, ensuring compliant food storage, supporting kitchen operations, and assisting with equipment upkeep. The role also includes serving as backup for emergency refrigeration response and performing assigned duties during the school year and summer months.

 

Essential Functions:

Delivery & Transport Duties

  • Transport school nutrition inventory, food, and supplies to all schools according to established schedules and operational needs.
  • Deliver meals to designated schools, partner locations, catering events, and registered summer meal sites.
  • Complete daily district SNS money runs and transport kitchen bank deposits in accordance with the district's bank schedule.
  • Pick up and deliver school nutrition interoffice mail, packages, and materials as needed.
  • Pick up, receive, dispatch, and distribute materials and supplies throughout the district's school nutrition operations.

Inventory Management & Food Storage

  • Manage, organize, and rotate district inventory, including maintaining the high school commodity freezer and SSC outdoor freezer.
  • Store all food and supplies in accordance with local health department regulations and USDA storage requirements.
  • Track movement of inventory and assist with maintaining accurate stock records.
  • Transfer food and supply inventory throughout the district on a weekly or as-needed basis.

Maintenance & Custodial Support

  • Perform minor equipment repairs, replacements, and maintenance tasks as directed by the Utility Supervisor or School Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Assist with general custodial and upkeep tasks needed to support kitchen operations.
  • Provide support during emergency refrigeration failures, including assisting with relocating food to alternate storage and responding on-call, 24/7, when needed.

Seasonal and Special Assignments

  • Complete special projects during summer months, including deep cleaning, preventative maintenance, and inventory of school nutrition kitchens.
  • Support kitchen setup and equipment organization for the upcoming school year.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all health, sanitation, and food handling regulations related to food storage and transportation.
  • Ensure district vehicles are operated safely and maintained in good working condition.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for deliveries, inventory movement, and maintenance tasks.
  • Adhere to district procedures for money handling and secure transport of school nutrition deposits.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the efficient operation of the School Nutrition Services Department.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience in delivery, warehouse operations, custodial work, or food service preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Valid PA driver's license required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to safely operate district vehicles including vans, small trucks, or refrigerated vehicles (if applicable).
  • Knowledge of safe food handling and storage practices (training provided upon hire).
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to track and rotate inventory.
  • Ability to follow delivery schedules, directions, and district procedures accurately.
  • Basic repair skills and willingness to learn equipment maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and communicate effectively with school staff and administrators.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and strong attention to detail.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, move, and transport items up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to work in cold storage environments (freezers, coolers) for short periods.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb in and out of vehicles repeatedly throughout the workday.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent travel between district schools and facilities.
  • Exposure to outdoor weather, hot/cold environments, and varying work conditions.
  • Use of district vehicles and equipment daily.
