Pay Range: $29.19 - $43.79

Summary:

The Lactation Counselor is responsible for providing lactation management services to expectant and new parents. Duties include daily bedside lactation rounds; consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems; daily maintenance of lactation phone calls; in-service education for maternity/NICU/Family Care nursing staff, and documentation and communication of plan to patients, families, staff and physicians.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs and documents daily bedside lactation rounds. Using the history obtained from the patient, develops, implements, and evaluates the breastfeeding plan of care, modifying the plan as needed. Communicates the plan to nursing and medical providers, arranging follow-up care and referrals as needed.

  • Returns phone calls made to the lactation line and performs call-backs daily, providing support, guidance, and referrals to other health care providers as needed. Documents discussions in the patients EMR.

  • Provides in-service education related to breastfeeding to OB/NICU/Family Care staff, (i.e. Validation Day, weekly newsletter, one-on-one new hire education). Maintains and expands own knowledge by participating in continuing education.

  • Assesses, intervenes, and reassesses the patient's self-report/symptoms of pain promptly and takes appropriate action according to standard operating procedure.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Certification:

  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) | Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice | Prior to Start Date | HR Primary Sources

  • Licensed by a governing board in healthcare | North Dakota | Prior to Start Date | HR Primary Sources

  • Licensed by a governing board in healthcare | Minnesota | Prior to Start Date | HR Primary Sources

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) | American Heart Association (AHA) | Within 90 days of Start Date | Learning Management System

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) | American Academy of Pediatrics (RQI Partners) | Within 5 Months of Start Date | Learning Management System

Education:

• Preferred: Bachelors - Healthcare- OR -Bachelors - Nursing

Language Requirements:

This position requires proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English to ensure effective communication in the workplace and with patients, families, and team members.
