Veterinary Assistant – Internal Medicine

Join the Specialty Department at Virginia Veterinary Specialty & Emergency as a Veterinary Assistant dedicated to our Internal Medicine and be part of a collaborative team that provides advanced medicine in surgery, internal medicine, and other specialty services.
The Veterinary Assistant will support our veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians in the care and treatment of patients within our specialty services. This role combines hands-on patient care with essential support tasks to ensure smooth daily operations, excellent client communication, and the highest quality of medical care.
- Full-time schedule: four, 10-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with occasional rotating Saturdays.

- Opportunities to build skills alongside specialists, LVTs, and fellow assistants while gaining exposure to advanced procedures and treatments
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with examinations, treatments, and advanced diagnostic procedures
- Safely restrain and handle patients during examinations and procedures
- Prepare patients and equipment for ultrasounds, endoscopy, biopsies, and other specialty procedures
- Monitor and care for hospitalized patients
- Obtain and record patient vital signs, weights, and medical histories
- Collect and process laboratory samples as directed
- Administer medications and treatments under veterinary supervision and within state regulations
- Maintain accurate medical records and treatment sheets through Instinct
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with pet owners regarding patient care and updates
- Clean, stock, and maintain treatment areas and specialty equipment
- Support a positive, collaborative environment focused on exceptional patient and client care
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
- High school diploma or GED required
- Preferred have at least 1 year of veterinary medicine experience
- Must be a bright, friendly, and effective communicator in order to communicate with clients, visitors, veterinarians, and other hospital staff.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and move freely for extended periods of time
- Must be able to lift 50 squirming pounds
- Must be able to work in a veterinary environment with exposure to infection or contagious diseases
