Description of Work

This Marine Patrol Officer position is responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations of the Marine Fisheries Commission. Law enforcement work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls for service and for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints to assess and handle cases, collecting and preserving evidence and following the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work. The N.C. Marine Patrol Officer may also simultaneously carry out responsibilities of patrol officer, inspector, and/or investigator.


Key Responsibilities:
• Patrol coastal land and water areas to inspect fish houses, seafood dealers, and fishermen for compliance with laws and regulations governing the taking, processing, and shipping of seafood.
• Communicate to the public statutes and regulations governing size limits, the opening and closing of seasons, and waters closed to fishing.
• Inspect boats used in the taking of clams, oysters, finfish, scallops, crabs, and shrimp to determine that vessels and fishermen are properly licensed, and the catch has been made according to laws and regulations governing license, size, amount, and legal gear requirements.
• Operate small boats or assist in the operation of large boats to check fishing operations in North Carolina coastal waters.
• Apprehend and cite violators of Marine Fisheries laws and rules and testify in court.
• Ensure assigned equipment is kept to high operational readiness as well as with general maintenance.

Recruitment Range - $45,506 - $54,960

Dare County - The recommended candidate for this position will be expected to physically live within the area of Rodanthe to Ocracoke, North Carolina. 

Stipend details: A housing stipend of $600 will be paid monthly to compensate the officers who are required to live in the area of Rodanthe to Ocracoke. The $600 monthly housing stipend would be forfeited if the incumbent were to transfer out of the assigned area.  The stipend is subject to payroll taxes. Subsequent salary increases will be applied to the base salary only.

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state’s marine and estuarine resources. The DMF’s jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Must complete all requirements for an NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification, including completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training, in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission within one year of employment.

Must be at least 20 years of age.

Possession of a valid driver's license.
