Job Description
System Engineer – Managed Kubernetes
The Container Services team is responsible for delivering Leaseweb Managed Kubernetes: a platform that empowers customers to deploy, manage, and update their own Kubernetes clusters while simplifying the complexity that comes with running them at scale. We are looking for a motivated System Engineer to help build and evolve this product.
Product Engineering at Leaseweb
Our team of approximately 110 engineers works in small scrum teams, each with end-to-end responsibility for a specific product or part of our architecture. We work on a remote-first basis, coming together in person at our Amsterdam headquarters twice a year.
Our organizational structure is flat, placing a high value on independence and entrepreneurship. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed, creating a highly motivating work environment where you will work alongside some of the most inspiring colleagues in the industry.
What is the role about?
As a System Engineer in the Container Services team, you are responsible for developing our container offering based on Kubernetes. Your main activities will be automating the deployment of Kubernetes clusters across Leaseweb's various compute offerings, as well as maintaining and monitoring those clusters.
You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals: software engineers, system engineers, a scrum master, product owner, and product management. You are not afraid to experiment, but you always keep observability, scalability, stability, and reliability in mind.
Key Responsibilities:
Automate deployment, monitoring, and management of Kubernetes clusters across Leaseweb's compute offerings worldwide
Explore, evaluate, and integrate new Kubernetes versions and components, advising on best practices and identifying issues before they reach production
Support customers and the development team with Leaseweb's Kubernetes product
Integrate new features into Leaseweb's Kubernetes product
Participate in regular on-call duty (Engineer on Duty.
You will make this happen by:
Collaborating closely with software engineers, the product owner, and the scrum master to design and iterate on new features
Assessing new components and technologies, recommending trade-offs and optimal implementations, and proposing ideas that could expand or improve the product offering
Delivering across the full lifecycle: design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and aftercare
Writing customer-facing documentation and how-to guides
Sharing Kubernetes expertise across the wider engineering department (~110 engineers) and actively supporting teams in container adoption
Troubleshoot cluster issues and contribute to runbooks that help the team resolve problems faster
What we're looking for:
You love working in a team setting. You enjoy building new solutions using the latest technologies. You believe that continuous improvement also applies to yourself and have the desire to grow. You are not afraid to experiment but at the same time keep in mind observability, scalability, stability and reliability.
Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, including deploying and managing clusters in production
Experience operating Kubernetes at scale, managing multiple clusters across different environments
Proficiency with Helm and Kustomize for application packaging and deployment
Experience with ArgoCD or a similar GitOps tool for continuous delivery, with a solid understanding of GitOps, SRE, and DevOps principles
Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or demonstrable knowledge of Kubernetes networking and storage fundamentals (CNI plugins, Ingress controllers, API Gateway patterns, Storage Classes) and cluster lifecycle management using ClusterApi
Experience architecting cloud-native applications with resliency & scalability in mind
Solid knowledge of Linux operating systems (Ubuntu and Flatcar) with experience performing standard system administration tasks (OS maintenance, DNS, backups)
Good communication skills (in English)
Nice to have:
Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) certification
Scripting skills in Shell and/or Python for automation and tooling
Familiarity with CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins and artifact registries such as Harbor
Knowledge of Kubernetes ecosystem tools such as etcd, Traefik, Velero, or Kyverno
Experience with Go (Golang)
Experience with automation and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g. Chef, Ansible, Terraform)
Experience with cloud platforms such as OpenStack or CloudStack
Previous contributions to open-source projects such as Kubernetes, CNCF, or relevant projects
Benefits include:
Participation in annual company bonus scheme and company pension
Internet allowance and travel allowance
Working from home policy
Work from abroad: Up to 4 weeks per year, following policy guidelines
Lease bike plan
25 days of paid time off (and the option to buy or sell up to 5 more days)
Free lunch, parking, and fresh fruit provided when in the office
Access to the Leaseweb Academy, a personalized learning platform offering a variety of studies, (Dutch) courses, and trainings
Attractive relocation packages and an agency that takes care of the entire visa process
Fun events year-round – from virtual pub quizzes to summer parties, company runs, quarterly hackathons and much more
A multicultural work environment (our colleagues are from over 60 countries!) in a company where you can truly make a difference
