THE ROLE

The Middle School Band Teacher is responsible for developing scholars’ musical knowledge, technical skills, creativity, and appreciation for music through engaging, standards-aligned instruction. This educator will cultivate a culture of excellence while preparing scholars for performances, concerts, and other opportunities that showcase their growth and achievement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned band instruction that develops scholars' musical literacy, instrumental technique, and performance skills.
  • Create a joyful and rigorous learning environment where scholars are challenged to achieve musical excellence while building confidence and creativity.
  • Teach instrumental fundamentals including tone production, rhythm, music reading, ensemble performance, and music theory.
  • Develop and implement differentiated instructional strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of all scholars.
  • Prepare scholars for school concerts, community performances, festivals, and other musical showcases throughout the year.
  • Monitor scholar progress through ongoing assessment and provide timely, actionable feedback to support growth and achievement.
  • Maintain inventory, organization, and care of musical instruments, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Build strong relationships with scholars and families through proactive communication regarding scholar progress, performances, and program expectations.
  • Foster a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes belonging, discipline, collaboration, and artistic expression.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school leaders, and community partners to support school culture and scholar success.
  • Meet all professional expectations, including lesson planning, internalization, data analysis, performance preparation, and participation in professional development.
  • Continuously improve instructional practice through coaching, feedback cycles, and ongoing professional learning.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in service of school and scholar success.

THE MUST HAVES

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Valid state teaching license/certification (Tennessee or Mississippi), or a commitment to enroll in an approved alternative certification program upon hire
  • Experience teaching instrumental music and directing band ensembles preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in instrumental music instruction and conducting techniques
  • Strong ability to navigate instructional technology and data system

THE PERKS

  • Compensation: This position is salaried; salary offers are commensurate with experience. The starting salary for a first-year teacher in Jackson, MS is $47,895 and Nashville, TN is $53,610.
  • Retirement Plans: Employees may participate in TCRS retirement plan in Nashville, TN, or the Principal retirement plan in Jackson, MS.
  • Paid Time Off: Employees receive 10 days of Paid Time Off, in addition to network closures. This includes 8 personal leave days and 2 mental health days.
