Engineering Manager Job Description
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our software engineering team in Bengaluru. This is a hands-on role. You'll spend roughly half your time writing and shipping production code — React, modern JavaScript— alongside the team. The other half is people, process, and direction: growing engineers, making architectural calls, and keeping delivery on track.
You'll lead a team of Staff ReactJS/NodeJS Frontend Engineers, Senior Backend Engineers, and Senior Quality Engineers. We also expect you to be an active AI engineer — someone who uses tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot in daily work, not just someone who knows they exist.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead, mentor, and coach a team of software engineers (Frontend, and Backend) to foster their professional growth, career development, and technical capabilities.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, and provide constructive feedback to team members.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-trust team environment that encourages innovation, ownership, and continuous learning.
- Participate in the recruitment and hiring process to attract top engineering talent.
Technical & Architectural Guidance:
- Make architectural decisions for both frontend (ReactJS, Node.js) and backend (Java, Node.js, distributed systems) components — and be the person the team comes to when those decisions get hard.
- Work closely with Staff Engineers to define technical roadmaps and resolve complex technical challenges.
- Guide the team on AI engineering practices: how to use agentic tools effectively, where they help and where they don't, and how to build systems that incorporate AI thoughtfully rather than just bolting it on.
- Build alongside the team, not above it. When the team is using Claude Code, Cursor, or other agentic tools to ship features, you're in there with them — pairing, reviewing AI-generated code critically, and raising the bar on what good looks like in an AI-assisted workflow.
- Hold the team to coding standards, quality metrics, and security practices across all deliverables.
- Stay current with the team's stack: ReactJS, Node.js, Java/Spring Boot, relational and NoSQL databases, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and CI/CD pipelines.
- Contribute directly to production features. About half your time is coding.
Project Delivery & Execution:
- Oversee the end-to-end delivery of features and projects, from planning and estimation to execution, testing, and deployment.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, UX/UI Designers, and other cross-functional stakeholders to translate product requirements into actionable engineering plans.
- Ensure efficient execution of Agile/Scrum processes, managing project risks and dependencies effectively.
- Champion a strong quality mindset within the team, working closely with the Senior Quality Engineer to establish robust testing strategies and automation.
Strategic Planning & Vision:
- Contribute to the broader engineering strategy and technical vision for the organization.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in web development, distributed systems, and quality assurance.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and innovation within the team's operations.
Communication & Collaboration:
- Serve as a key liaison between the engineering team and other departments, effectively communicating progress, challenges, and technical insights.
- Drive cross-team collaboration and knowledge sharing to ensure alignment and leverage expertise across the organization.
Required Qualifications:
Experience: 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, including at least 3+ years in a technical leadership or engineering management role.
Technical Acumen: Strong foundational knowledge and practical experience in modern web development technologies, including:
- Frontend: Deep understanding of ReactJS, modern JavaScript (ES6+), TypeScript, and related state management libraries.
- Backend: Expertise in building scalable distributed systems using Java/J2EE (Spring Boot preferred) and/or Node.js.
- Databases: Experience with relational (e.g., Oracle) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
- APIs: Proficiency with RESTful and/or GraphQL API design and consumption.
Quality Assurance Mindset: A strong understanding of software quality principles, test automation strategies (Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress), and CI/CD pipelines, with a commitment to delivering high-quality software.
System Design: Experience in designing and architecting highly scalable, performant, and resilient web applications and services.
Cloud & DevOps: Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
Agile Methodologies: Demonstrated experience leading teams in an Agile/Scrum environment.
Leadership & Mentorship: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and grow engineering teams. Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
Problem Solving: Strong analytical and decision-making ability in complex technical and organizational situations.
AI Engineering: Hands-on experience with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar) in real production work. You should have opinions on how these tools change the way code gets written and reviewed — not just awareness that they exist.
Hands-on React and JavaScript: You must be comfortable shipping React and modern JavaScript to production. This is not a role where frontend experience is optional.
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a high-growth or startup environment.
Familiarity with micro-frontend architectures.
Knowledge of performance optimization for large-scale web applications.
Experience with spec-driven development frameworks such as GitHub SpecKit, SuperPower, GSD, or similar. We use these workflows to keep AI-assisted development structured and reviewable.
