Job Description

  • Position Reports To: Special Education Coordinator
  •     and through Executive Director and Board of Directors

     

  • Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Special Education 
  • Tier 4 Special Education License, or ability to acquire one prior to beginning work
  • Experience working with students with students in a multicultural, urban environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tools and strategies to evaluate student strengths and barriers to their education, and to assist students in overcoming those barriers
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the details of Special Education due process requirements

     

  • Focus Areas for the 2026-2027 School Year:
  • Developing a plan partnership with the Due Process Teacher on Special Assignment to lead school due process planning and implementation
  • Completing academic and post-secondary transition assessments for the evaluation and re-evaluation of students
  • Provide targeted coaching and mentorship to special education teachers and paraprofessionals to elevate teaching strategies, classroom engagement, and curriculum delivery.
  • Facilitate professional development workshops focused on innovative teaching methods, assessment techniques, and student engagement strategies.

    Essential Job Functions: 

     

  • Due Process Planning and Implementation:
  • Partner with the Special Education Director and Special Education Coordinator to plan and oversee the implementation of a due process schedule that ensures on-time meetings, timely IEP creation and updates, evaluations, and documentation, communicating with case managers, service providers, and school psychologists, about upcoming meetings and their responsibilities.
  • Write due process documents as outlined in the plan made with the Director of Special Education.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing. 
  • Development of special education evaluation plans. Assessment of students in special education evaluation. Observation of students in special education evaluation. Evaluation writing. Participation in evaluation meetings to share results, as requested. Consultation surrounding special education needs of individual students. Review and/or completion of due process paperwork.  
  • Complete due process paperwork in compliance with state and federal regulations. 
  • Manage Due Process Child Study Team Dashboard or other management system
  • Attendance and lead active participation in Child Study Team meetings every week:
    • Create and distribute CST agenda
    • Take attendance at meetings
    • Manage Child Study Dashboard                                                                                                                         
    • Assist with taking notes during meetings                                                      
  • Initiate regular communication with special education teachers and general education teachers as needed for collaboration on due process tasks
  • Refer need for sending and receiving student records to the SPED Support Specialist.
  • Refer need for SPED changes in the school data system (IC) to the SPED Support Specialist. 
  • Change student status in SPEDForms per the MARSS status change form (the school MARSS manager will handle these changes within the MARSS system)
  • Give access in SPEDForms to providers and teachers for the students with whom they work
  • Pull reports on SPEDForms as needed by the SPED team
  • Meet weekly with the Special Education Coordinator to brief them on Due Process work and participate in systemic leadership
  • Act as a qualified representative of the CPA district at Evaluation Results Meetings and IEP Planning meetings (shared with IEP Due Process Coordinator)
  • During the 2024-25 school year, collaborate with Case Managers to determine need for progress report reviews or protocols, and implement any mutually agreeable strategies

     

  • Assessment:
  • Ensure appropriate administration or review of student academic performance for all new-evaluations and three-year evaluations
  • Ensure appropriate completion of secondary transitions assessments for all students ninth grade and above (or in 7th and 8th grade evals in prep for 9th grade deadline)
  • Collaborate with the school psychologist to ensure that evaluation reports are completed within time limits and sent to parents/guardians
  • Communicate assessment results by meeting with the IEP team and facilitating the evaluation portion of the meeting

     

  • General:
  • Participate in additional required skills training as assigned, and school-wide training as required. 
  • Supervise and oversee special education students as assigned. 
  • Participate in the school-wide staff evaluation process
  • Maintain professional boundaries and appropriate confidentiality at all times.
  • Adhere to the provisions of the CPA Staff Handbook and Employment Agreement
  • Participate in the mission and vision of Community of Peace Academy

    Required Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of behavior analysis, including how antecedents and consequences affect student behavior. 
  • Skills in handling confidential information. 
  • Skills in computer technology necessary to fulfill the requirements of the job.
  • Understanding of special education disability areas and legal compliance with special education law regarding behavior.
