Career Opportunity
The city of Las Vegas is accepting applications for Service Writer. This position will schedule maintenance services and initiates automotive vehicle and equipment work orders; maintains appropriate records.
Supervision Received
Receives general supervision from Fleet Services Supervisor or higher-level staff.
Examination ProcessA civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a City position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.
Eligible List
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.
Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job." Some positions may require preliminary background checks.
Essential Functions
- Schedules preventative maintenance using the computerized scheduled maintenance system and schedules repairs for city internal combustion equipment and vehicles.
- Monitors the inventory and condition of city equipment and vehicles.
- Coordinates and communicates with appropriate department personnel to schedule maintenance and repair services and informs personnel of the status of repairs.
- Responds to inquiries and requests for service in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Coordinates with other city staff to dispatch the appropriate personnel or contracted company for emergency roadside assistance.
- Enters automotive repair information into the automated data entry system.
- Reviews output from the automated work order system and makes recommendations to shop supervisor.
- Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing and other general clerical work.
- Prepares clear and concise reports; prepares and processes paperwork and forms.
- Participates in requisitioning materials as needed.

- Stays abreast of innovations and new technology.
- Operates and secures assigned vehicle and other assigned equipment; determines whether vehicle is in good working order; maintains vehicle in clean and fueled condition.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Experience
One year of experience in the automotive industry in automotive repair or parts supply.
Training
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Knowledge of
Current automotive terminology.
Automotive inventory control methods and practices.
Automated data entry systems.
Automated data keyboard operations.
Methods and procedures of data entry.
