The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment for all students. The Adult Life Preparation Program (ALPP) is a work-based program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, serving students from all three district high schools. The program, located at the FHSD administration and Francis Howell Union building, focuses on helping students develop vocational and soft skills throughout the school day.
Job Summary
The ALPP Paraprofessional assists teachers by supporting students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in both work-based and instructional activities. This role includes providing vocational guidance, helping students build interpersonal and advocacy skills, and supporting job development and career exploration. The paraprofessional also collects data on student progress and assists with coursework under the direction of a teacher.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision and Safety:
- Accompany students during work-related activities and community outings to ensure their safety and successful completion of tasks.
- Support students in advocating for themselves and developing interpersonal or soft skills.
- Assist with job development and career exploration in the community on a regular basis.
Instructional Support:
- Assist students in small groups to complete work-related tasks aimed at increasing independence.
- Help students with daily coursework under the direction of a teacher, reinforcing learning and soft skills.
Data Collection:
- Collect and maintain data on student performance in areas such as work experience, communication, and interpersonal skills to monitor progress.
Other Duties:
- Perform other related tasks as assigned to support the functioning of the ALPP and the overall educational environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Minimum of sixty (60) college credit hours required or completion of the Missouri Paraprofessional Assessment.
- Completion of Missouri's 20-hour online substitute training program upon hire (paid for by the district).
- Must have and retain a valid Missouri Substitute Teaching Certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Experience:
- Experience working with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities is desired.
Skills:
- Proficiency in assisting students with work-based tasks and vocational skills development.
- Ability to collect and maintain accurate records of student progress.
Abilities:
- Ability to work with diverse students, manage tasks, and adapt to changing needs.
- Comfortable engaging with the community for job development and career exploration activities.
