Job Description

What's the role?

 

As an Assistant Controller, this role provides financial and accounting leadership by overseeing month‑end close, balance sheet integrity, inventory and general accounting operations, and internal controls. The Assistant Controller manages and develops a team of accounting leaders, partners cross‑functionally with FP&A, Technical Accounting, Supply Chain, and Global Business Services, and ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with SOX and accounting standards, and continuous process improvement. Reporting to the Controller, this position plays a key role in maintaining strong financial governance, managing risk, and supporting informed business decision‑making across the organization.

How can you add value?

 

Month-End Close

  • Lead and coordinate the end‑of‑month close process, ensuring accurate and on‑time delivery.
  • Partner with GBS to support the close for Puerto Rico (PR) and U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI).
  • Coordinate activities between local accounting teams and GBS.
  • Proactively analyze close results throughout the close cycle to identify and address issues early.
  • Review revenues, direct costs, and operating expenses for accuracy and reasonableness versus prior month and forecast.
  • Perform and oversee variance analysis to ensure financial results are reasonable and well understood.
  • Maintain clear, timely communication with the FP&A team during the close.
  • Conduct special reviews of unusual or complex close items and escalate matters as appropriate.

Balance Sheet Oversight

  • Ensure high‑quality reconciliations and effective oversight of both local and GBS‑managed balance sheet accounts.
  • Oversee month‑to‑month balance sheet variance analysis across all entities.
  • Ensure appropriate account ownership aligned with the skill level and capacity of available resources.
  • Complete and maintain balance sheet risk assessments.

People Leadership & Continuous Improvement

  • Supervise Senior Managers and provide guidance, coaching, and development support to the broader team.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement by identifying efficiencies, documenting lessons learned from each close, and implementing process enhancements.

Inventory Accounting

  • Ensure inventory balances are accurately reconciled to subledgers.
  • Confirm that adequate accounting controls are in place for inventory management.
  • Partner with Supply Chain to provide oversight and ensure adherence to inventory control requirements.
  • Provide the business with insights on inventory working capital, exposure, and obsolescence risk.

General Accounting & Technical Alignment

  • Ensure alignment with Technical Accounting to maintain adherence to accounting policies and standards.
  • Coordinate with the accounting team to provide roll‑forward commentary to Technical Accounting and LLA Accounting for quarterly balance sheet reviews.
  • Provide guidance on unusual or complex transactions in partnership with Technical Accounting.
  • Ensure intercompany transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled between entities.

Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with SOX requirements and that accounting control owners effectively execute their responsibilities.

Reporting & Advisory

  • Report directly to the Controller.
  • Provide recommendations to improve accounting processes, controls, and overall efficiency.
  • Demonstrates and ensures compliance with the Customer First Philosophy, all Liberty Latin America's policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct and Liberty safety standards and procedures.
  • Other functions may be assigned.

What do you need?

 

Education and/or experience:

 

Bachelor degree is required in  Accounting. CPA preferred. 

6-9 years of experience in a senior level of an audit firm, and/or senior accounting position.

 

Other  qualifications:

  • Strong ability and inclination to collaborate with others.
  • Forward looking problem solver, who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions.
  • Computer Knowledge (Microsoft Office).
  • Fully Bilingual (Spanish and English)
