Duties and Responsibilities:
Processes employee disciplinary actions and grievances in the Detention Division
Drafts disciplinary actions for Jail Administrator’s signature
Prepares cases for detention hearing proceedings with the Jail Administrator
Researches historical information, policies, procedures and codes and gathers supporting documentation such as Sheriff’s Civil Service Rules, Detention and Sheriff’s Policy and Procedures
Maintains calendar for hearings proceedings and notifies individuals and witnesses of hearing dates
Attends hearing proceedings at the divisional level and documents outcome of proceedings
Monitors pending cases and drafts time-sensitive responses to cases
Maintains division statistics on caseload information and develops complex reports
Assists Grievance and Appeals Specialist and District Attorney’s Office in preparation of cases that go beyond the divisional level;
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Human Resources or a closely related field and two years human resources experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of employee grievance and appeal processes; knowledge of civil service procedures; knowledge of jail operations and procedures.
Skill in understanding and applying department policies and procedures; skill in researching and analyzing complex information; skill in communicating technical information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to compile and report information; ability to operate personal computer, typewriter and basic office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Department Heads and attorneys.
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
Working Conditions:
Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 5-10 lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment.
Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential functions.
Working conditions are in an office within a jail environment.
