Responsible for monitoring and observation of Jail Programs areas at Adult Detention Center facilities under the supervision of experienced Deputies; operates and monitors surveillance equipment; maintains activity logs; completes various clerical tasks; assists deputies in escorting inmates and staff when warranted to and from inmate programming locations; and performs other related duties as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitors and conducts visual observation of Jail Programs classroom environments inside the Adult Detention Center facilities
Alerts appropriate authority when intervention by uniformed Deputies is necessary
Enforces ADC computer use policy and maintains control of the ADC Jail program areas
Maintains activity logs regarding incidents occurring within Jail Programs areas
Prints and distributes class/program rosters and related documents
Communicate with living unit officers to ensure that inmates are being routed to and from program areas according to schedules
Recognizes, detects and immediately reports potential contraband and safety concerns to Deputies
Performs maximum observation of inmates at assigned location
Assist Deputies with inmate escorts to and from program areas when required
Assists in researching defendant and suspect criminal history and driver’s license information utilizing the Texas Criminal Information Center (TCIC) and National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) computer systems
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, and three (3) years’ experience dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of security practices and procedures; knowledge of security equipment and monitoring techniques
Skill in communicating verbally by telephone and radio; skill in monitoring multiple surveillance screens simultaneously
Ability to operate personal computer, two-way radio, handless telephone receiver, basic office equipment; ability to deal with hostile, abusive or irrational individuals; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, service providers, co-workers, other County employees, volunteers and the public
Must be able to stand in a stationary position for extended periods
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office
Must complete operational procedure training offered by the Sheriff’s Office within six (6) months of employment
Must possess a valid driver's license
Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
May be required to work more than forty (40) hours during the workweek
May work weekends, holidays and perform shift work
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Working conditions are inside a jail environment with occasional exposure to hostile or violent people, bodily injury, contagious diseases, high noise areas, and unfavorable fumes and odors
Subject to continuous periods of sitting or standing in a stationary position for up to 8 hours per day
Occasionally may work in an outdoor environment exposed to varying weather
Exposed to professional staff and potentially hostile people
Occasionally moves items weighing up to 20 pounds
Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
Operates a computer and other office productivity equipment
