Under direction of the Maintenance Supervisor; is responsible for supervising the Life and Safety work unit; performs fire safety code inspections; oversees and participates in the inspection, testing, maintenance, repair and certification of Bexar County fire alarm and sprinkler systems; ensures certification is in accordance with Federal, State and local fire and safety requirements; maintains testing records; coordinates repair and maintenance services; develops maintenance and testing schedules; submits requisitions according to site specific budget codes; conducts projects; and performs related duties as required for the buildings within the divisions inventory.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervises, trains and evaluates Life and Safety Technicians
Performs fire safety code inspections in accordance with the Federal, State and local fire and safety requirements and Jail Standards regulations
Inspects, tests and certifies fire alarm and life safety systems through visual inspection and/or computerized testing and participates in or oversees repair of fire alarm and life and safety systems
Inspects, tests, repairs and certifies fire sprinkler and standpipe systems
Maintains accurate testing records as required by regulatory agencies
Coordinates vendor repair and maintenance services and escorts contractors and Fire Marshal representatives through County buildings in order to maintain and/or inspect equipment
Develops and maintains preventive maintenance schedules for life and safety systems such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers and hoses, exit and emergency lights, emergency power generators, ANSUL and Halon Systems
Provides technical assistance to operational and administrative personnel on life and safety systems operations
Prepares reports regarding work unit activities and responses to external inspection findings
Conducts work and/or projects in coordination with Life and Safety, Fire Marshal, and impacted offices / departments
Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and five (5) years’ experience in testing and repair of fire alarm and sprinkler systems; additional education in a related field may be substituted for experience
Considerable knowledge of the testing, repair and certification of commercial building fire alarm and sprinkler systems; considerable knowledge of safety standards and practices; considerable knowledge of related tools and equipment
Skill in inspecting, repairing and maintaining fire alarm and sprinkler systems; skill in exercising independent judgment
Ability to supervise technical and skilled employees; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to operate personal computer, two-way radio and basic office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, outside agencies, the news media and the public
Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license
Must secure and maintain a favorable background check and clearance investigation
Must secure and maintain a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
Must be able and willing to attend training at department’s discretion
Required to work rotating shifts
Required to be on-call 24/7/365
When required, shall work extra hours, holidays, weekends and other shifts
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
