The Junior Deck Seafarer is the entry-level position to the Deck Department. This is a trainee position for further promotion to Ordinary Seaman and Able Body Seaman.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • General cleaning, rust scaling and painting of the vessel’s Hull, Decks, equipment, Masts and superstructure.
  • General cleaning, rust scaling and painting of the various vessel’s inside / enclosed space.
  • General cleaning, rust scaling and painting of the vessel’s tanks.
  • Storing equipment and supplies in a safe manner and in the proper storage areas.
  • Work on the mooring decks during arrivals and departures.
  • Assist as directed during Bridge watches.
  • Assist as directed during Anchor watches.
  • Assist to work with the Carpenters and Assistant Carpenters on varied assignments.
  • Responsible for properly disposing of garbage as needed.
  • Stand gangway watches when in port and at anchor.
  • Assist with Tender crew duties as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
  • This is basically a trainee position for future promotion within the deck department.
  • He/she shall be introduced to the ships SMS system as soon as practically possible.
  • He/she will be extensively trained, and put to work with Safety, Fire and security equipment and matters as required.
  • Shall be familiar with the ships infrastructure, but will mainly be dealing with matters within the Deck Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six months experience working in a manual labor/production/repair capacity is preferred.
  • Basic to Intermediate level English verbal and writing skills, including the proper use of English grammar is required.
  • The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment; also, must be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines.

EDUCATION

  • Highschool diploma or foreign equivalent is required.
