Job Description

Job Purpose

Responsible for hiring, team development, technical leadership, and supervision of the Computer Shop and Service Desk within the IT division at McMurdo Station. Oversees and assigns daily tasking of Computer Technicians. Responsible for the quality and timeliness of deliverables and implementation planning and execution. Responsible for compliance with existing ASC and Information Technology policies/procedures and direction. Manages inventory, purchasing, and maintenance of 1000+ computers, printers, and peripherals to ensure the desktop support needs of all personnel in McMurdo Station are met. Allocates resources efficiently, implements projects on a timely schedule, and coordinates with staff across multiple agencies, stakeholders, and departments on station to ensure client needs are met. Acts as the primary point of contact between grantee/technical events and the Information Technology & Communications department from the planning season to implementation. Analyzes grantee requests and provides support for hardware/software integration, network infrastructure, and outreach requests. Design customized solutions for contractor and grantee IT needs in McMurdo Station and remote field sites. Manages communication with deploying contractors, grantees, and technical events regarding expectations and limitations of IT resources on station. Is part of the McMurdo IT and Communications leadership team during the planning and on-ice austral summer season.

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority on the job site.
  • Handles confidential matters (e.g., management reports) in accordance with management policy.
  • Required to attend any planning and reporting meetings with IT and Station Leadership as deemed necessary.
  • May be required as deemed necessary to serve as a backup to the IT&C Manager in any and all capacity if the IT Manager is absent or incapacitated.

Qualifications

  • US citizenship or permanent residence is
  • BA/BS degree Equivalent experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Applicable technical and professional certifications
  • At least 5 years' applicable
  • Be able to adapt to and evaluate new and emerging
  • Experience with Information Security vulnerability remediation
  • Experience with hardware and software
  • Working knowledge of Apple and Microsoft operating

Physical Requirements

  • Annual deployment will be required in this position. The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment
  • Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures.
  • Individual must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer; must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Position Expectations

  • This is a full-time
  • Location: Telecommute (March-August) / McMurdo Station (August - February).
  • All expenses paid while deployed including meals, lodging, cold-weather gear, tools, and travel to/from Antarctica.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
