Job Description

INTERNAL / EXTERNAL

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A valid State of Michigan Guidance and Counseling Certificate with a (NT) endorsement.
  2. A Master's Degree representing intensive course work in the principal's and practice of Educational guidance; educational testing and measurement; counseling; the organization and administration of guidance services; and the psychology of learning.
  3. Two (2) or more years of paid work experience as High School Guidance Counselor.

 

PERFORMANCE DUTIES AND RESPONSIILITIES (summary includes but is not limited to the following):

  1. Register high school students and orient them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
  2. Assist assigned students in course and subject selection.
  3. Be familiar with high school education program requirements.
  4. Use standardized test scores to help students understand aptitudes and abilities, and offer help in formulating educational and occupational plans.
  5. Maintain and interpret student records and protect their confidentiality.
  6. Remain readily available to students in order to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growthy, self-understanding and maturity.
  7. Assist in improving individual attitudes toward educational requirements.
  8. Assist to prevent students from dropping out of school by counseling students, parent contact and exposing them to alternative programs.
  9. Take active role interpreting school objectives to students and parents.
  10. Supervise the preparation and processing of college applications according to provisions of the School Board's policy on student records.
  11. Organize and conduct career conferences during the school year.
  12. Schedule informational sessions for students with college and armed forces representatives.
  13. Update the "Manual of Course Descriptions", and prepare pre-enrollment form.
  14. Assist students with financial aid information.
  15. Assist with annual follow-up study of Vocational Education students with GISD.
  16. Insure that GISD, Skill Center, Voc Ed quotas are met or exceeded annually.
  17. Assist with graduation program and help with the distribution of caps and gowns.
  18. Work with principal on the master schedule for the next school year.
  19. Conduct regular counseling session with students at each grade level (5-8) (9-12).
  20. Assist in administering, monitoring and verifying the completion of all school tests such as M-STEP, ACT, NWEA, and other related tests.
  21. Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the building administrator.
  22. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.

 

REQUIREMENTS:  
Newly hired employees must satisfactorily pass:

  1. Reference checks
  2. Police clearance including digital fingerprinting.

 

ANNUAL SALARY:  
Salary and exceptional fringe benefits based upon BEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
