
Sr. Environmental Engineer - Hazardous Waste and Water
Job Description
Job Highlights
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the Clean Water Act (CWA), Stormwater/NPDES, and other applicable waste and water standards.
- Conduct environmental inspections (e.g., weekly RCRA container inspections, Satellite Accumulation Point [SAP] audits, wastewater pH monitoring, and Stormwater Best Management Practices [BMPs]) and perform environmental sampling.
- Plan, oversee, and review wastewater discharge monitoring and waste characterization testing (e.g., TCLP) for plant processes.
- Support key environmental programs, including hazardous waste management, industrial wastewater pretreatment, and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC).
- Prepare and submit environmental reports to regulatory agencies (e.g., Discharge Monitoring Reports [DMRs], Biennial Waste Reports) and maintain online compliance databases.
- Collect, track, and analyze environmental data, such as water consumption, discharge volumes, and waste generation trends, to support compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Serve as liaison with regulatory agencies (e.g., State Ecology or EPA Regional offices) and coordinate ongoing water and waste permit renewal processes.
- Collaborate with the legal team on permit documentation, waste disposal contracts, and water discharge compliance matters.
- Oversee the site’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, including water intensity, waste diversion, and hazardous waste reduction goals.
- Lead meetings, produce agendas and minutes, and manage communications with local wastewater authorities and waste regulators regarding permits.
- Implement and manage Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment and Stormwater General Permits (NPDES).
- Develop and maintain waste and water-related programs, forecast regulatory changes, and provide training to management and operations teams.
- Execute environmental programs, follow established guidelines, and independently resolve issues regarding spill response or waste non-conformities when necessary.
Experience / Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
- Min. 5 years of experience in environmental compliance, preferably in a chemical plant or industrial setting.
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and experience working with regulatory agencies.
- Experience with Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR), Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC), and Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to identify gaps in existing programs and develop solutions to ensure compliance and sustainability.
Physical Requirements:
- Work outdoors in varying conditions (heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, vibration).
- Perform field activities: walk long distances, climb ladders, carry equipment (up to 50 lbs), bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and work in confined spaces or at heights.
- Frequent repetitive motions and occasional fine hand work; operate vehicles and tools.
- Work around heavy equipment while wearing required PPE (safety glasses, gloves, boots, hard hat, hearing protection, respirator).
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
