Job Title:Special Education Teacher Assistant-Transition Program, Transitioning Onwards Promotes Success (TOPS), Students Ages 18-21
Reports To:Director of Special Education
Classification:Paraprofessional (Clerical/Teacher Assistant)

Primary Purpose:Assist young adults and teachers in the special education TOPS program, which is a program focusing on job training.
Qualifications/Skills:

Education/Certification:

  • Minimum of 48 college hours or high school diploma/equivalent plus pass a District Assessment.
  • Educational Aide Certification.
  • Obtained or Ability to Obtain a Texas Commercial Driver License to transport students preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to work with young adults using appropriate interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate with children and adults effectively.
  • Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
Major Duties and
Responsibilities:

Instructional Support:

  • Assist in carrying out the instructional program under the supervision of teaching personnel.
  • Assist in maintaining student records.
  • Assist in preparation, use and maintenance of job training materials and equipment.
  • Assist with teacher planned activities, exercises and drills.
  • Follow teacher instruction and guidance.

Student Management: 

  • Assist in maintaining student records.
  • Assist in supervising student grooming activities.
  • Supervise students in job related settings

Other:

  • Participate in planned inservice and professional growth activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

Equipment Used:Computer and various office equipment.
Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.

Physical Demands: 

  • Repetitive hand motions.
  • Prolonged use of the computer.
  • Frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.
  • Moving small stacks of textbooks, boxes, equipment and other campus equipment.
  • Physical capacity to lift, transfer and otherwise assist students with disabilities (e.g. ability to lift 50 lbs.)
