Job Description
VACANCIES: LITERACY COACHES - 5 Positions
A literacy coach is an instructional leader who improves student literacy achievement by building teacher capacity through job-embedded professional development. They use data to drive instruction, model evidence-based reading practices, conduct classroom observations, and provide feedback. Key duties include co-planning, co-teaching, and mentoring educators on effective literacy strategies.
REPORTS TO: Director of Elementary Education
EFFECTIVE: August 2026
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Per Contract between the Darien Board of Education and the Darien Education Association - Teacher salary plus $5,264 stipend and 5 additional days
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must hold one of the following Connecticut certifications: Reading and Language Arts Consultant, K-12 (#097); Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts, 1�12 (#102)
- Five years of successful classroom teaching experience in reading/writing
- Expertise in the science of reading, data analysis, adult learning principles
- Excellent interpersonal/communication skills
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Engage in coaching cycles (observation, feedback, modeling, co-teaching) to improve classroom instruction
- Lead data-driven decision-making, analyzing student assessment data to identify intervention needs and instructional trends
- Facilitate workshops, study groups, and training for teachers on evidence-based reading strategies and the science of reading
- Assist teachers in implementing, aligning, and differentiating literacy curricula, ensuring compliance with state standards
- Support the Director of Elementary Education in ensuring the successful implementation of all aspects of the elementary curriculum
