Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Supervise and manage the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school. 

Qualifications:

Education/Training:

Master's degree in Library science

Valid Texas Librarian or Learning Resources Specialist certification 

Candidate must have a satisfactory outcome of the fingerprinting check/background check

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of library science and current instructional theories

Ability to instruct and manage student behavior

Strong organizational, communication, leadership and interpersonal skills

Ability to work with multiple technology platforms to support technology integration, library programs, makerspaces, and campus technology initiatives

Demonstrate a clear understanding of SWISD curriculum, library and ISTE standards

Ensure the library is safe, inviting, and the learning "hub" of the school

Proficient in Google Workspace applications

Proficient in media technologies

Ability to work successfully with students and staff

 

Experience:

Two years of librarian experience

Two years of classroom teaching experience (preferred)

Prior experience leading staff development 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students and other library users to help them locate resources and use research techniques and technology tools to enhance learning in the classroom and in the library.
  2. Foster a love for reading among students with engaging library experiences through maker spaces, book talks, and activities designed to foster a love of reading and learning.
  3. Promote and coordinate cross-curricular makerspace opportunities.
  4. Create and deliver training and/or professional development for staff and students related to library use, library resources, instructional technology use, digital citizenship, and other topics as appropriate.
  5. Support the curriculum through collection development of print and digital resources.
  6. Work collaboratively with teacher groups to incorporate library resources and instructional technology to enhance student learning.
  7. Plan with teachers and groups of teachers to integrate technology, library resources, and multimedia materials and help them schedule materials for classroom instruction in accordance with SWISD curriculum.
  8. Serve as an information resource for users of library/media center materials and provide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability and use of campus, district, and global learning resources.
  9. Align instruction in library skills to the Texas state standards.
  10. Attend mandatory Library, Curriculum, and other district/campus meetings.
  11. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Library Services, and Director of Digital Learning.
  13. Effectively plan and execute school library programs to meet identified needs.
  14. Provide educational resources in a variety of formats to support and extend the curriculum of the district.
  15. Select, purchase and maintain library equipment.
  16. Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, weeding, and inventory of library resources and equipment.
  17. Review and select global resources in alignment with the district curriculum.
  18. Create and maintain campus library website with online resources.
  19. Encourage use of online/streaming video programs for educational purposes.
  20. Create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students that will promote lifelong practices of reading and learning.
  21. Promote ethical behavior with both staff and students in the use of district technology and information and sources.
  22. Schedule and supervise the preparation of Book Fairs and other programs or fund raisers that benefit and support library programs and operations.
  23. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  24. Compile budget and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  25. Perform collections assessment and development procedures to assess needs and provide up to date reading material and resources and a balanced collection that aligns with the campus curriculum.
  26. Design book and other media orders based upon requests, student and staff interests, social emotional needs, curriculum needs, assessment results, and professional book and media reviews.
  27. Manage library budgets for books, general supplies, periodicals, maintenance, contracted maintenance, travel, and activity account.
  28. Acquire quotes for library supplies and materials and provide justifications for orders.
  29. Prepare and submit bid specifications and documents for approval, contact vendors, compile addresses, and oversee mailing operations.
  30. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  31. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and Board policy in the library/media services area using the Texas State Standards and Guidelines for School Library Programs.
  32. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library/media center program and make changes bases on the findings using Texas State Standards and Guidelines for School Library Programs.
  33. Provide leadership in working with administration and faculty to establish policies of library services to meet the needs of students and faculty.
  34. Interact with students to promote positive attitudes toward school library.
  35. Participate in the planning of new library facilities or in the remodeling of existing libraries.
  36. Maintain schedules for the use of the library.
  37. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  38. Coordinate yearly Digital Citizenship program for e-Rate compliance purposes, and collect documentation.
  39. Analyze and purchase materials for the collection to attain appropriate size, age and balance of the collection.
  40. Perform an accurate Library inventory each year at the campus.
  41. Perform the yearly weeding and replacement of materials at the campus.
  42. Attends, local, state, and/or national professional conferences and workshops.
  43. Engages in activities, organizations and the use of professional journals to keep abreast in Library Science.
  44. Explores and evaluates new and emerging technologies to assist campus with innovative instructional strategies.
  45. Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
  46. Perform other duties as assigned.

and public relation skills, and ability to maintain emotional control under stress
